Correct... and if a young dumb racist can shoot 3 people in self defense because he fears for his life being attacked with a skate board, while defending a CVS (allegedly), then surely the right has no problem with the LEO's (they claim to support) shooting trespassers and rioters who have violently breached the capitol and are looking to Kill the VP and overturn the election.

 

If only it were that simple.

 

I'm glad the LEOs showed restraint. I think it would have made that situation and the aftermath much worse had the authorities shot scores of protesters. It may not have been criminal to shoot these violent insurrectionists, but it was probably better to show the restraint they did.

 

Why?

All this does is embolden them. Hey lets try and overturn the government again, not like they will do anything.

I'd be more sympathetic to your position if there wasn't a concerted effort by the maga terrorists to overturn democracy, but let's face it, THEY ARE.

What if they are successful next time?

 

Because the optics of government shooting down citizens would encourage more unrest rather than less.

The removal of Trump and allowing Democracy to work is way more effective than gunning down the insurrectionists

Well, Trump is removed from office. The person that freely and fairly won the election is now in office.

To me that is the largest measure of if Democracy is working. I think Democracy faces many challenges that go back long before Trump. The structure of our system insuring difficulty of third parties and the idea that money is free speech are cheif among those challenges.

If third parties could run on equal footing with the traditional parties as well as limiting the amount of money being spent would lead to a much more democratic process of election.

It's comical that we have always mocked supposed faux democracies where only one party is allowed to compete for office, but we limit the number to just 2. Yet many other nations have multiple parties allowed to run without imposed restrictions.

Again, the government shooting down its citizens in the street or houses of government doesn't strengthen our democracy.

Those images would have been co-opted, abused and capitalized upon by groups like the Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, and others to spread the idea of deep state actors oppressing the citizens. Armed protests and violence may well have spread.

Because of the restraint, the face of January 6th is Trump supporting terrorists attacking and assaulting law enforcement, threatening to kill the Vice President and Speaker of the House. They were given enough rope to hang themselves and their movement. And that is exactly what happened.

None of that changes the challenges we still face.
