The Law and Order crowd supports and defends insurrectionists. This is the future of the GOP Party. Elections will never be the same again. If Trump runs again and loses, I expect recounts for months, no acceptance of defeat, and the incitement by his party of another violent insurrection again.

Margorie Taylor Greene comparing thugs looting, rioting, and damaging property is like apples and oranges to a Political Party led insurrection by supporters of the leader of that party, bearing flags with his name on them.

Besides, not all rioters and looters are BLM or Antifa anyway.

I am guessing a simple majority in the House, but then it would also need to be passed in the Senate. Its interesting that Democrat leaders of the House agreed to republican demands including equal representation on the ten person commission, the ability to choose commission members, and equal subpoena power. But then republican House members added other demands unrelated to January 6, like requiring the commission also investigate 2020 protests and the 2017 shooting of scalise.

It's pretty obvious to me that most of the GOP Caucus has no interests in learning more about what happened on Jan. 6th.

Actually, I believe it does, or at least, mccarthy does, hence why he is making such an effort to oppose the bill. It further pushes the retrumplican narrative that January 6 isn't important (simply tourists), that any investigation into January 6 is simply a partisan attack on trump and republicans.

Fortunately there are more than a few republicans who do see it important to understand what happened and why...

I mean, I want some accountability and all, but this is really extreme. Punishments should be commensurate to the crime. While serious, mere participation isn't nearly as severe as murder, and most murders aren't met with capital punishment either.

trumps favorite president, andrew jackson would strongly disagree. ive said it before and ill say it again - if he was president when this happened he would have personally hung every single one of those insurrectionist traitors and those who incited them on the steps of the capitol.

i also look at hitlers munich beer hall putsch and the way germany didnt hold him accountable. he and his supporters were emboldened by the lack of punishment and look how that turned out. look what is happening now. the GOP is trying to sweep this all under the rug and get their cult members to either forget about it or actually try and blame antifa and BLM for it (hitler and his followers did the same thing after the beer hall putsch in terms of blaming leftists for all the violence). we are going down the same road germany did in the 1930's and we can not let it happen.

treason against your country is an extreme act and must be dealt with in the most severe manner possible. especially when it comes to active duty military, who swear an oath to defend the constitution. as a nation we can not tolerate what trump and his supporters did and the best way to ensure this never happens again is to punish the traitors in the most extreme way possible.

Trumpism may be taking us down the road to fascism, but your path will get us there equally quickly. While Hitler was taking advantage of the tolerance of Germany's government, Stalin was dismantling all of the procedural mechanisms of his own government so he could silence his enemies -- oftentimes with executions -- to achieve the same totalitarian rule. You don't oppose fascism with fascism but with democracy and the rule of law. We should put the full weight of the DOJ into prosecuting insurrectionists to the full extent of the law, but no further.

Those of us who view the events of Jan 6th as treasonous are not proposing that any person who participated in the insurrection have a new standard of treason applied to them. The rule of law absolutely supports the charge of treason (conviction would of course depend on the specific facts):

    https://www.criminaldefenselawyer.com/resources/treason.htm

Similarly, I don't think jo mama is proposing denying the accused a fair trial or right to counsel.

So I think it's quite disingenuous for you to say that his "path" is one that will lead to fascism or compare it to Stalinism.

You should probably let @jo mama speak to that. He said he wants the death penalty for all participants. Even if a treason charge is completely supported, no fair-minded court would levy the death penalty to all participants. That's banana republic level. I'll point out that your link specifies a minimum sentence of 5 years imprisonment, which is a far cry from execution.

(As for the Stalin comparison, he was asking for it by going straight to Hitler comparisons.)

Actually, if you read the full statute:

    §2381. Treason
Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.

    (June 25, 1948, ch. 645, 62 Stat. 807; Pub. L. 103–322, title XXXIII, §330016(2)(J), Sept. 13, 1994, 108 Stat. 2148.)

You'll note that the first punishment listed is death. It's an admittedly wide (and somewhat odd) gulf between that and the minimum, but the fact that death is listed first certainly implies that it would be strongly considered.

Now, all that being said, it is more likely that the participants would be charged under insurrection:

    §2383. Rebellion or insurrection
Whoever incites, sets on foot, assists, or engages in any rebellion or insurrection against the authority of the United States or the laws thereof, or gives aid or comfort thereto, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.

    (June 25, 1948, ch. 645, 62 Stat. 808; Pub. L. 103–322, title XXXIII, §330016(1)(L), Sept. 13, 1994, 108 Stat. 2147.)

Not sure if DC allows capital punishment but if they do, then these folks may get the needle.

Well, that rules out Trump Cruz, and a few other members of their party from running again. Throw the damn book at them.

Is it obvious to anyone else that Roger Stone and company tried to organize another Brooks Brothers riot? - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooks_Brothers_riot
Stone was hanging out with the Proud Boys before the riot. The Proud Boys were at the front lines pushing through barriers.
