People rioting in the streets and stealing out of stores is one thing..........

People organizing at the capitol building with the plan to take it over and to prevent the elector votes for the President is a completely different level.... especially when you have pipe bombs, at least one vehicle a block from the Capitol stopped loaded with guns and explosives.

The two are not even close to being on the same level......... one of them was an attempted coup or at a minimum an effort to stop democracy and scares the electors..... let's not forget we know there were people that entered the Capitol looking for Pence and Pelosi.

I'm curious what the studies will be on this **** stain of an era. Out of all past presidents how did Trump get people to believe in his bs and to literally throw away their lives for him.

Not to be repetitive, but I'll repeat my schtick: It's a 30-year process. Cable news profit model (angry addicted audience) + internet profit model (emotional engagement = clicks; reinforcing feelings = clicks), led people to largely sink into bubbles. This was particularly true for AM radio and Fox audiences (IMHO) that started saying that nearly everyone but them were "biased" and unreliable. So by the time we get to 2018 or so, millions of otherwise-sincere Americans think WSJ, WaPo, AP, NYT, CSM, BBC, all major newspapers, magazines, etc, (most of the outlets in the world that hire real investigative reporters of any kind) are in the liberal tank. Add to this the process that, after the fall of the Soviet Union, we of course were ripe to look at each other to find enemies in America. (This was predicted by some historians earlier.)

So Trump, being the genius-level marketer/con that he is, exploits what he sees and puts the model on steroids. Now even Fox news is to be disbelieved if they criticize him. Everything is biased except his twitter feed and his statements, (though he came to often even deny those -- literally "I never said that," when he did.) So then, if you're following him, you suddenly have only his current daily word to go on.

And he not-subtly started to call himself the GOP, and then call himself America. So criticism of him was an attack on GOP, and then an attack on America, and then even an attack on the Constitution. You see his followers saying the (totally legal and verified) election of Joe Biden is an attack on the "Constitution," but it's really just a negative outcome for Trump.

TL;DR: Media and especially conservative media built an iron-clad bubble over 30 years, and here comes Trump, who's amazing at mesmerizing and manipulating people, and in the end, our species is depressing. :D

The bold part --- can't agree more.

What's scary is there was a segment of the population that was apolitical, wasn't part of the conservative media bubble, but was 'radicalized' in Trumpism within months or a few years. This part was possible due to social media (wide scope, compressed time).

    ...you know...it really kinda-sorta WAS.
...Obama getting elected (twice) really sent a lot of these people over the edge...
...and they were already standing pretty close to it then...;)

...which is another reason why you don't try to fix stupid.
...you get the hell as far away from it as you can and innoculate yourself as best you can.

    ...wow.
...where have I heard that treatment plan for viral contagions before...?;)

It's like they only had the "P" page of "people to kill".

"Pelosi, Nancy..........and Pence, Mike. Well, that's good for a start."

Such an important point. These were your typical Low Information voters/non-voters who could give 2 sh$ts about Civics, and probably couldn't even name the 3 branches of government. However Social Media was able to meet them where they are on social issues, and then weave in connective tissue that ultimately led to Trump as the god-king. If you watch some of the earlier QAnon videos circulated they did this within a 10 minute video where it starts at social issues, and within 10 minutes, it's taking you right to Trumpism.

The question is, if Trump is gone, will these low information voters again become non-voters, or are they now fully engaged for generations in right wing politics? What might be best for our country is if almost overnight if they disengaged in the political activist process. You won't win them to the other side, but you could figure out a way to make politics boring again enough to where they then go back to just obsessing about football, and Nascar.

I think that only happens if politics is basically banned from social media which will never happen at this point. De-Radicalizing this segment of the population will take generations. Hopefully Biden can make politics so boring, and Covid ends so they have other activities to keep their minds busy. If that's the case maybe then they will somewhat disengage in radicalized political activism, and our society can calm the F down.

Constitutionally, that doesn't matter. The power to pardon, by most non twitter con law experts, is limited regarding impeachment only to not be able to pardon people to get them free of impeachment.

That's the plain language of the Constitution. I posted the best potential counter argument article to that...I think it was an Atlantic article by two law professors, but it was aspirational, as to what the law should be, not how it's currently and has been interpreted. I'll find it again...

...and with all the **** that Obama went through in his terms of office...
    • Mitch McConnell having a backdoor meeting with other republicans vowing to make Obama a one-term president
    • the Tea Party, intent on grinding every legislative gear to a screeching halt almost every day after lunchtime
    • everybody blaming Obama for not working with people who were intent on grinding every legislative gear to a screeching halt almost every day after lunchtime
    • lying about everything about the man...from his birth certificate to his taste in clothing (which is probably more his wife's taste in clothing)
...anybody wanting to lament the "pressure" the Donald got put under because he was incompetent and unfit for the job before he ever got it, needs to shut up.
