Hey if he couldnt get the grades to play for a school then he must be dumb....i play basketball for my school and im still able to get grades in the A sometimes B range
So he drops 7-10 draft spots but still ends up in the NBA. Yeah college ball would get him more exposure, but thats not that bad a consolation. If Louis Bullock, Scoonie Penn and Allan Ray is his competition, then maybe he shouldnt have much to worry about... If they're not a #1 through 3 rated player at their position out of high school, probably even no lower than #2, then the Euro jump is a BAD option. Too many things can happen to ruin the path to the NBA. A #1 thru 5 overall rated player, if its a 1 and done Euro move then it shouldnt hurt that much because they have the hype and "potential" tag anyways.
Reports seem to be that it's a 3 year contract with the standard NBA type buyout situation. That doesn't always work out as the Spurs can attest with Splitter and Scola.
You don't have to be a smart guy to be good at the "GAME" of basketball. It is more important to be a quick thinker than a good student. DD
I think its good for him and the school. He gets to train for his future profession and a real student athelete gets to play for zona. Not only that, it doesn't count on the graduation results. Plus I think before next year, it will be 2 yrs after your high school grad class. I think they should do like baseball and really make the D-league a true d-league. If you apply for entry out of high school, you have to go to nbdl for at least 2 yrs before being drafted. If you go to college, u have to go for at least 2 yrs or 1 college and 1 nbdl. Either way, u can't be drated before 2 years after your supposed graduation class. Pay all nbdl guys 100k which would entice 2nd rd players to stay here and play. Not to mention, some guys might be in the nbdl for 4 or 5 yrs, but might be called up and contribute to a team.
Ricky is projected as a #1 pick in draftexpress 2009 Mock Draft . They also had Derrick Rose going #1 in the 2008 mock draft before he played his freshmen season with memphis.
Someone on another board that I'm on, that should know, says that J'Covan Brown, a combo guard from Port Arthur who signed with Texas, can't meet entrance requirements, and will probably go to Europe. No confirmation yet, and he still could go to Junior College, but it'd be interesting.
If he can't make the grades, you have to look at the other options...Maybe he just doesn't want to go to school...I mean, he could go the JC route... I don't know much about the kid, but his potential departure to Europe would have a huge impact to future players IMHO...
