I think they should of went after Josh Smith but I guess they felt they couldn't give him a big deal and give Monta Ellis a big deal too.
The Maggette signing pretty much ends that unless Baron Davis took a huge pay cut and I do mean HUGE.
That over-reaction Maggette thread of a few days ago in the GARM is pure gold. Gasp ... Maggette not going to the Spurs and going for the money?
I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority here but what does Corey Maggette give them that they didn't get out of Stephen Jackson? Maggette gets to the line more but Nelson's offense doesn't revolve around penetration...it's more of a helter skelter offense that doesn't seem like a right fit for Maggette. And signing Maggette to a 10 mil a year contract even before locking up either Ellis or even Biedrins? Mullin's a smart one. As for the Sixers...I think it's a good move but not like a SPLASH! move. Not because of Brand's injury last year, but because I don't think he's their answer to the Boston Celtics or even the Detroit Pistons. Yes, they took Detroit further than anyone could have imagined but when the Pistons finally got their collective heads out of their asses, it was game over. It's a GOOD move by the Sixers, but they're not getting a top 10 talent by any means....which is what I'm pretty sure everyone in philly will say because the guy is getting 16 mil a year.
well I like smith more too, but maggette isn't a bad consolation prize...he fits nellie ball quite well...
He's not a top 10 talent but he's a PERFECT fit for that Philly team. Not only does he play sound, scrappy defense but he's money from 15 ft. Can consistently create his own shot against marquee players. Good signing, I'm surprised he left the Clippers after his request for Baron Davis.
Wow, the 76ers are right back in it after such a relatively short rebuilding period. I figured they'd be awful for a while longer. Not too many teams acquire big name free agents these days. It almost makes me want to clear up cap space. Almost. The Clippers could still be pretty good. In the west that aint saying much, but with Thornton improving and Kaman hitting his prime that's not a bad front line. Donald Sterling must make being a contrarian in LA tough. Why does that guy own a team? Does he even like basketball? The Maggette signing for GS at 10m per doesn't excite me if I'm a Warrior fan. Wasn't he in line for a MLE from a contender? Did they have no shot at a guy like Smith? I'd be thrilled to get him at that age and rare skill set.
I think he might be top 10. When healthy. He was playing at such a high level on both ends before he went down. I had him ahead of Dirk. He can do it all.
They will still have enough money for biedrins/ellis.. Maggette will like the freedom of nellie ball and with his athleticism and size plays right into the versatility nellie wants in his players. Nellie can easily adapt his offense to fit maggette's skills.
I agree and when you think about it, this was a safe and good move because if Atlanta matched the deal they would offer Smith then they would lose out on Smith and lose out on Maggette, so good move by the Warriors.
It also appears that Philly will trade Carney, Booth, and a future 1st round pick to Minnesota for a future 2nd round pick to free up more cap space.
One at a time: Maggette and Jackson play totally different games. Maggette is a physical freak who gets to the line consistently. There are times when he completely dominates defenders. Players that get to the FT line at will are a boost to any offense. In particular, the Warriors love isolations plays that allow their players to beat individuals defenders off the dribble. While Maggette is more of a slasher than an iso guy, he will fit right in. SJax, on the other hand, has fallen off the deep end in love with 3 pointers. He has no conscience any more. For every cold-blooded 3 he drains late in 4th quarters, he will brick several more throughout the game that causes the Warriors to fall behind or blow leads. SJax's other favorite move is to back down and post up smaller defenders. Brand may not be a top 10 talent, but he's their missing inside scorer. He's a "go to" guy when they need a tough basket in crunch time. The wheels fell off the Sixers offense when the Pistons played tough D. Brand is the guy who can break the logjam and also make it easier for other players to get open shots. Brand is also a very good defender. The Sixers have a chance to be very tough on that end of the floor, especially in the paint. IMO, adding Brand puts the Sixers ahead of the Pistons. If chemistry or coaching problems don't mess things up, I expect the Sixers to get a top 4 seed and contend for the Finals.
I think you're severely underrating Brand. Guy was a legit MVP candidate a few years ago. You don't think a guy with his length, defense, midrange game, and first step matchup with KG and Sheed in the the east?
