Mills is running mini spring training workouts before home games to get the rookies (some of whom skipped AAA entirely) up to speed. I bet that this has positively impacted those players development. Thus, the manager can have an impact on the team, in non-game situations.

No doubt. Yet, Uncle D more or less was the reason he wanted to get the hell out of here. I don't remember specifics (I'm sure other fans can clue you in more), but he was the main cause.

Now, our next GM will almost be better by Wade just with addition by substraction. The Crane group is targeting whatever young GM that Tampa has and some other promising ones so I thought at one point. Wade definitely isn't the future regardless of our next owner.

Astros to retain skipper Brad Mills' coaching staff for 2012 regular seasonn

The Houston Astros announced Tuesday that Mike Barnett (hitting coach), Doug Brocail (interim pitching coach), Dave Clark (third base coach), Bobby Meacham (first base coach), Al Pedrique (bench coach) and Jamie Quirk (bullpen coach) have been invited back for next season under the guidance of Brad Mills.

Although the majority of Mills' staff was signed through 2012, the organization elected to extend a vote of confidence to the coaches, considering these types of decisions tend to occur at the end of the regular season for Major League Baseball teams.

It makes sense from a historical context, doesn't it? Here's a list of 50 teams in MLB history who have lost at least 105 games in a season. 50 teams.

He's not comparing a manager to "nothing". He's comparing them to one another. If we fire Brad Mills and hire some random hot assistant or AAA manager, we're not to lose or gain much if any.

It's the same concept as player's WAR value. A replacement value player is "positive" to his team, but at the same time still worthless.

I realize its late, and I should have done this at the start, but I added a poll to make it easier to see the consensus here at Clutch.

The only point of any of the managers at any level in the organization is simply in young player development, mechanically and mentally. On the surface, there are many things Mills has done that does not seem to show that to be his primary focus or goal. Though, we do not know what is going on behind the scenes and what he is trying to deal with and how, so it hard to judge. However, hopefully Crane and whoever comes on judges him for that alone.

Is that how you read this?

MLB coaches are as close to worthless as you can get in professional sports
