Boxing - each weight class for a unified belt - needs to have 3 "playoff" fights per year, leading to a championship every year. Have the 8 top ranked contenders (cross-references from the WBC, IBFm WBA, & WBO rank lists) at each class fight on April 1st. The remaining 4 again over Labor Day. Have the championship fights in each class for the title on NYE. That's it. More like an MMA fight schedule, but one Yearly reigning champ who either has to defend the title the very next year, or gets a bye for the first round - something to that effect. The payouts would be MASSIVE and people would clamor to attend/PPV the "playoff" fights. Fighters would bust their asses to get into the Top 8. Just an idea I wish would come to fruition. Matt is right that boxing still produces some great fights but they are essentially meaningless. Boxing is without structure. Those fights occur without weight, without relevance. So long as boxing is a sport of disunified belts, commissions, etc it will continue to die a slow death.
I hope that fight will happen. They've got to settle this for everyone once and for all. Guzman and soto should be interesting.. I am looking forward to that one. I just feel Soto is more polished and tougher than Guzman.
