Is that a joke? Dude is enormous, nothing like a "guy off the street." He has tremendous speed and athleticism for someone his size and is an elite wrestler.

I promise you that some "guy off the street" is not going to climb into the UFC cage and have a lot of success without extensive training. I laugh at the thought that some random dude could take a superman punch from Dan Henderson and get up. I laugh at the thought that a guy off the street could take the kicks from Machida and not cry. And I laugh at the thought that anyone in here would last a single round with Brock Lesnar before they were a swollen bloody mess.

If you guys have mayzar's blessing, I stand corrected.

Just know that not everybody enjoyed the thread you're talking about and these hits on mazyar looks to us who haven't veiwed the thread like some here have a serious case of homophobia, and since nobody every response in any other way, the whole board looks guilty.

To Brooksball, I apologize for butting in an ongoing joke between you and mayzar.

The fact a guy like lesnar who did pro wrestling could come in and dominate. I am sure he has put in work, but some of these mma guys have put in their whole lives for this to get dominated by a guy who was a good wrestler and good athlete. I have never seen anyone in boxing be good unless they spend their whole life preparing for it.

Nobody could walk into boxing and become heavyweight champion in a handful of fights with zero experience. It takes a lifetime of dedication that's what I'm saying. Kind of puts MMA in perspective as far as skill level, at least for the big guys.

I don't think they literally mean a "guy off the street". But you do see a lot of new guys from other sports getting into MMA. NFL Players, a few Pro Wrestlers and even a former boxer, Ray Mercer, who knocked out Former UFC Champ Tim Sylvia. I think thats what people mean when they say "guys off the street". Obviously, no guy off the street without legit training stands a chance in the MMA ring. It just seems as if MMA is the easier transition especially if you have a collegiate wrestling background or the size of an NFL player.

Not saying all those guys are success stories because I believe Brock, who MMA purist initially despised, is the biggest crossover success. He's pretty good too. Not bad for a former WWE Champ and failed NFL player.

lol at a "good wrestler". i guess if a 106-5 record, 2 time all american, and 2000 champion only makes you good then i dunno what to say. last time i checked wrestling was one of the top fighting backgrounds in MMA.

He is a great wrestler, but that doesn't change the fact that most all the current champions of the UFC are not primarily wrestlers. When I see lesnar most of the time I just see a guy using his size strength and wrestling ability to get on top of the guy. If he wasn't so big and athletic his technique would not be good enough. If you look at guys like GSP or Machido or Penn, while they are really athletic you can see the amount of skill in their game. I can't say the same about Brock.

and if shaq wasn't as big as he is he wouldn't be as good either. i agree brock has a lot of room to grow with his striking but people in general seem to be very dismissive of his dominant wrestling background as if he is only a big dude who just lays on people.

I wish he could fight fedor, that would shut a lot of people up, but I think he would get his ass kicked. The heavweight division in the UFC sucks.

I think Dana will eventually sign Kimbo for cheap and give him the right fighters to make him look good. Mr. Slice is a cash cow, draws ratings like no other. I guess a lot of people want to see him do really good or really bad. But I feel Kimbo brings UFC and MMA a whole new audience. Mainly casual fans that can relate to Kimbo.

i like kimbo a lot. the guy has a great attitude and doesn't seem to be a jerk. as long as he isn't fighting someone with any kind of ground game then he might be alright.

Ya but when he tried to step into a real sport he couldn't even make the cut to be a third stringer on a mediocre team his highlight was getting a sack after the referee blew the whistle in preseason. It just puts MMA in perspective. Bob Sapp was a similar story years back. He is just using brute strength to win. See if he can go try to box and fight Klitschko he will get knocked out in thirty seconds. It's two different levels of dedication. His wrestling background helps but he's mostly using his sheer size to win.

Not exactly. On a street or its probably not a very good idea to lie on your back in the guard. If you don't think so try lying down on the pavement and have somebody on top of you and grind into the pavement.

You're treating MMA though as though it was a single style when by definition it is "Mixed Martial Arts." While somepeople have been developing an MMA style I now for a fact that no one has put their whole lives into just MMA training as it hasn't existed that long.

Anyway anyone who thinks it just takes athleticism to dominate forgets that Lesnar got choked out his first UFC match and also that Kimbo Slice got embarrassed by a so-so fighter when he got into MMA.

There is a lot of technique involved in MMA that comes from a variety of combative arts and if any of you think that its just all strength I would suggest trying something like Jujitsu or Muay Thai and decide for yourself.
