Why are Christians so insecure? Seems like everything that questions their beliefs is offensive to them. You'd think if they were secure in their opinions, they wouldn't care what anyone else thinks.

How the hell was this offensive? the only vaguely offensive part about it was the refernce to the deity's murder, which is really only vaguely offense possibly because it implicates Jews. This isn't why your upset I'm thinking.

Your offended because he insulted Mel Gibson's honor by implying that he may have made this movie for self interested reasons? That's a little odd. Tell me, did you have a similar reaction when you found out that Mel Gibson's production company had licensed out Official Passion of Christ Crucifixtion Nail Necklaces in two varieties, MSRP $16.95 and $18.95?

well the juggernaut continues. it made over 51 million again this weekend easily beating Starsky & Hutch and Hidalgo.

I'm hoping Johnny Depp's Secret Window can beat it next weekend. If not then Dawn of the Dead likely will in 2 weeks.

ZRB -- yeah...i'm extremely insecure in my faith.

Looney Toon -- i have seen this movie...a child who can not understand the purpose of the violence he/she is seeing in this film has no business seeing this film. i look forward to sharing this film with my 4 year old son one day...one day in about 9-10 years. he understands something about Jesus dying on the cross...he understands that it hurt...and he understands that he did it out of love...that's good enough for now. i'm with you that he also has no business seeing american pie...but that doesn't mean we should rush and take him to see the passion.

I wasn't too impressed with the film. It had its moments, but I think it should have been titled, "The Gospels of Mel Gibson."

Yes, a lot of what we saw was straight from the Bible. But I don't trust how he filled in the blanks.

Of course the more hard-nosed Christians believe this story (in general) is pretty close to what actually happened. Me, I'm not so sure. I went back to the Gospels and their descriptions/explanations of Jesus' scourging are pretty spare.

I suppose I equate this film with so many other Gibson movies in their simplistic depiction of other races (Afrikaners in LWII, Chinese in LWIII) and their loving attention to violence (Lethal Weapons I-XII, Braveheart). Even if Jesus were scourged for, say, 15 minutes straight and pulped into hamburger (IF, I say) by a bunch of semi-r****ded Roman louts thanks to those vile and evil Jews, did the Romans actually flip him upside down when he was on the cross, etc etc, before planting the cross in the ground?

Is it really necessary to show in super-slow-mo how the blood spurted out of his hands when these were nailed to the cross?

Why is it that we take what happened and raise it to the 5th power? We know what happened was horrific. But we have to make sure that we take "scourged" from the Bible and have Jesus flayed, flayed, flayed, flayed, flayed, flayed, flayed, and show it all in loving detail.

Sorry, I thought it was an extremely sadistic and vengeful look at Christ. And we have enough of that s**t in the world right now. Jesus preached love and tolerance.

Gibson even included in flashback Jesus' words about "love your enemy." Well, swell, Mel. But why do your public comments and your films reflect none of this? NONE of it?

ROXTXIA -- interesting...i absolutely saw the love of Christ in the suffering. enduring incredible pain while all the while dealing with the temptations of just saying, "enough." and while the details of the Gospel accounts don't talk about flesh being ripped out, it can only be assumed when we know they beat him with a cat-of-nine-tails 39 times.

Max, this post made my day. I've often thought you must be a great dad, and here's more upstanding evidence. Cheers.

LT, I have posted in that thread. Just look for the moniker "B-Bob." :p

By the way, some would say that literal interpretations of the Bible are actually attacks upon it, stifling and weakening its message. Just another perspective.

Well, two big grains of salt for ya:
    1) I'm not a dad.
    2) I finally finished a dumb-ass research paper this weekend, so I'm very happy right now.

    Seriously, you are very welcome.

That probably played a part in it, but he also had anywhere from $25-45 million riding on it. Evidenvce points to him making making a controversy (in his Fox interview) before ANYONE else even said anything about it. He's also apparently the one that brought his father into this.

    That's disgusting.

yeah Gibson would make a pretty good carnival barker.

i've seen maybe two commercials for this movie in prime time.
he's had so much free publicity from the "news" media that he hasn't needed to advertise.
