A common mistake people make trying to "spin" the ball is actually moving the wrist from left to right when they throw. Never do this. If you want to try that method, Use the 'thumb out' technique. You hold the ball basically right on top of your wrist cradling it with your thumb, pointer and pinkie while your middle and ring finger remain inside the ball. If you throw it like this and flick your wrist in the right manner... it will produce quite a hook. I bowled like this to begin with and it worked for a while but eventually it began hurting my hands and I had to go back to proper form.
The thing that's worked best for me was definitely getting my own ball... a ball with a diameter roughly equal to the width of a standard bowling lane. This is pretty immune to lane oiliness and also to my talent level.
Also do not challenge this man in a winner-take-all bowling match. Notice the clear ball with a rose inside. Kingpin and The Big Lebowski are required viewing for any young aspiring bowler.
I've played with bumpers on before, but the goal was to get the least amount of pins knocked down. I have the urge to go bowling...just got my ball resurfaced and wanna test it out.
moes, are you an avid bowler or something? You seem to be pretty knowledgeable about the aspects of the game.
here Azadre http://www.bowl.com/coaching/tips/main.aspx check it over, post any questions you have about what you read. Ill attempt my best to guide you right...in theory. Personally, have been in a slump of Artestic proportions(no 200+ in 3 weeks[9 games]).
Ugh. Last time I went, the ball wanted to curve but just spun down the lane in a straight line and came back covered in oil. I can also usually bowl a few 200 games even with the house ball, but I actually couldn't break 120. Seems like bowling is one of those sports that don't require a lot of practice once you've been the time in. I bowled frequently for about a year or two in college and I still do as ever, given a decent lane.
just bowl it straight but helicopter style: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/kennmelvin/VHeliStr.Htm or amaze them with this kinda shot : <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/cNIdP5j_qMw&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/cNIdP5j_qMw&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
thats why everyone will tell you that if you want to throw a consistent hook, you need a real ball....it is the cover on those balls that cut thru the oil and cause a hook. house balls are normally made from rubber or plastic and are intended to go straight. If one wishes to be consistently good at this, practice is very much needed no matter how long you have been at it...even the pros on the PBA tour practice several times a week on top of the time they spend in tournaments.
I used to bowl 5-6 games a week, and 2 of my buddies were really into it as well. One of my friends' dads was a real good bowler. 225 average. Taught us a lot of stuff. I had my own ball back plus we also had a couple others that were designated (one got ridiculous spin, one went really straight, etc) for particular spares. These days I only roll every once in a while, and the house balls suck so I usually can't come anywhere near my true average (which isn't that great to begin with, probably like 160)
Like Moes said, try taking your thumb out and using a hook. I bowled a 215 the very first time I tried this...
Where I grew up there wasn't much of anything to do. 1.) Sit on my ass 2.) Go bowling 3.) Drive 30 miles to something fun 1.) can be explained by my post count, and 2.) can be explained by my responses in this thread.
rock-n-bowl was popular back when i was younger. decent turnout of young ladies as well. met one of my girlfriends there. ladies dig the hook... (i'll toss them up and you hit them out of the park)
Yeah the chicks would show up friday nights for cosmic bowling. Too bad most of them were jailbait. Nothin wrong with a lil window shopping though. [/kam]
