interesting...i guess the speed of bourgeois is coveted enough league-wide to fetch a decent return. nice job, luhnow. good luck q and bourg.
Chapman is 24, a lefty reliever with a dynamite fastball. Was a top 20 prospect in the Royals farm (the best farm in baseball). 4th rd pick in the 2010 draft out of Florida was a starter before he had tommy johns surgery in 2008 and then became the best reliever in college baseball. Luhnow says he's not major league ready and he'll either be in double-A or triple-A. Luhnow also says the PTBNL is the bigger part of the deal.
Definitely deserves its own thread. Hopefully Castro or Clutch will move the posts from the Spring Training thread into this one.
Based on Alyson's tweets, the PTBNL must be a 2011 draft pick. It seems clear that they know who it is, which means it isn't a list of players to choose from later, and Alyson says it will be a while before we know (1 year from the day they signed) and that it will make sense to us as well once the public finds out.
So here's a link to the Royals 2011 draft results - http://kansascity.royals.mlb.com/team/draft.jsp?c_id=kc Obviously wouldn't be one of their top picks. Maybe Ogando, Moen, Matt Murray?
I think no way does Quintero / Boug fetch us what was a 3rd rounder in the 2011 draft. I think we would be lucky to get a player the royals drafted in one of the top 10 rounds ... we already got at worst a C+ relief prospect with B upside ... not a bad piece at all .. If the ptbnl we got is a better prospect this will be an amazing trade .
[rquoter]"I will tell you that the player to be named is a key component of this deal," said Jeff Luhnow. "I'll tell you he's a minor league player, and whoever that ends up being is a key component of this deal. We wouldn't have done this deal without that part." "This deal gives us an opportunity to add prospect depth and we are excited about both players coming our way.”[/rquoter]
That sounds awesome .... I think that alot of people underestimate boug ... probably the relief pitcher was for quintero and the key player was for boug.
Luhnow must have some kind of magic, getting two legitimate prospects (not just organizational filler like Wade would have) for Bourgeois and Quintero.
Wade would have pushed for some soft throwing 26 year old relievers and call it a day. Good thing Jim Crane got rid of him quickly! I'm loving Lunhow
Wandy Rodriguez and the expirings of Brett Myers, Carlos Lee and Brandon Lyon could be interesting at the deadline.
Key component = Player will be Domingo Santana-caliber or greater How about Yordano Ventura? Undersized pitcher who can hit 100 with the fastball, potentially nasty change, and a "plus potential" curve.
I love Lunhow. He's made fantastic moves since he took over. Not surprising giving his pedigree. So nice to have a legitimate GM for a change.
Luhnow is looking spectacular. If he really got two actual prospects for a tandem in their 30s that wasn't assured of even making the team, thats highway robbery. He's already looking like an extreme upgrade over Wade.
