I would say being a great GM is 80% luck or tanking. If you get a great player and don't totally screw it up then you are set.

The guy who built the magic was a hockey guy. The lakers were gift wrapped a pretty good play. Ferry got lebron.

I don't know how he's going to have time to be a GM while he's busy being governor of Alabama.

The guy has actually had 2 jobs that pay well and he's good at -- playing basketball and running his mouth on TV. He should be content. Of course, saying he wants to be Governor or GM is just him doing his job running his mouth.

MJ has done very well with the Bobcats. They were a playoff team this year.

MJ has been very bad as a GM. Charles Barkley brought this up on Jim Rome.
Bobcats made the playoffs because of Larry Brown. MJ sucks at drafting and hasn't really been that good at trades either.

Indeed. MJ is also incredible at finding talent, drafting such hidden gems like Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison.

And like you said, the guy also knows when to make a run. He knows that the #7 seed in the east was there for the taking, and ensured that happened by mortgaging the future with a big trade. And everything came together for an incredible run at a 1st round beat-down.

Charles is one of the last people on Earth I would trust handling my money. Antoine Walker and Lindsay Lohan are probably the very last, so he's not the bottom of the barrel.

“But it’s going to have to be a great situation. I hope the Lakers team is a great situation for him if they are going to lose this finale, and he somehow can get the LA GM job. I also want to him to get the GM job for Jazz if he can not get the LA one.

I think he'd be a good GM from knowing which players to acquire to mesh with a team, but he doesn't know the business side well enough to make contracts / salary cap and all the rules mesh well. There's a value equation he'd struggle with.

He could do it but would need a very tough personality to partner with him to get the business side right - someone who could stand-up to his personality without clashing with him.

And MJ signed Larry Brown who coaches players on a team that MJ help put together. If GMs can be blamed for failure or credited for success, MJ shouldn't be any different. Sure he's had some draft day blunders but not every move can be a hit.

As for trades, he got Stephen Jackson and Acie Law by only giving up Raja Bell and Radmonovic. Also snagged Tyrus Thomas for Acie Law, Flip Murray and a future pick. I'd say those are good trades.

Really? You're going to bash a team for their first playoff appearance in franchise history? I guess every GM should put all their cards in and go all out for a championship right? Who needs rebuilding?

Isaiah Thomas must be very excited to see somebody who's got the potential to break his bad record.

Our dream trade partner if this happens. Matter of fact, every NBA team's dream partner.

You gotta admit, this would be entertaining at the very least. Unless he's the GM of your team.

He probably thinks of the job in terms of trading players, but I doubt he'll put in the work to scout college and international guys. He'll look like one of us...a message board GM.

I think the Chuckster has done a few too many "Who He Play For?" skits on Inside the NBA.

I'd figure that Sir Charles would fare like a lot of players-turned-GMs have in recent years, if he were to pursue a future as a GM in the NBA.

The thing that made Charles Barkley a hall of fame player was his focus on his own individual ability. Most great players have the physical ability to take a game at any time, regardless of the circumstances. There are times when, it seems, they can play one-on-five basketball and win.

That mentality doesn't translate into evaluating players and team building from a front-office perspective. Tunnel-vision doesn't work for GM's. You can't see what you want to see, or believe that you'll rub some of what made you a great player off onto another player. It just doesn't work that way.

I'd love to see the round mound give it a try anyway, though. Look at how much he's done for T-Mobile, or TNT Sports....or even Taco Bell....!
