You do have a point that the Rockets can't wait for Jones to mature. But as I said, I personally do have faith in him improving his defense this summer. However, I think Jones' weakness in defense is over-blown in this playoffs match-up with LMA. It is arguable that the coaching team has not done enough to either put Asik on LMA or bringing double-team help to defend the all-star in the first two games. Bosh does match-up well with LMA. But Bosh on Rockets roster automatically means that Asik and Lin are gone. With nearly $60 million designated to the starting line up I don't know how the Rockets can fill the glaring defensive hole at the wing with a quality player. In addition, I strongly doubt that the Rockets can get effective bench strength unless the Rockets can sign vet minimum contracts like the Miami do.
I wouldn't say NO defensive weakness, doesnt have a lot of sand in his pants but granted, bosh doesn't nearly get the credit he deserves.
Bosh was monster in Toronto am pretty sure if he goes to a different team he'll shine again, the guy is talented he just needs to be in a different situation.
Bosh's defensive stats are very good. His Defensive Rating (DefRtg) via nba.com is 100.8, 2nd best among the Heat starters to Chris Andersen. Team average is 102.9. See the following: http://stats.nba.com/teamPlayers.html?TeamID=1610612748&MeasureType=Advanced&PerMode=PerGame. His x-RAPM on Defense is 3.2, the best of the Heat starters; and 2nd best on the team behind Andersen: http://stats-for-the-nba.appspot.com/teams/MIA.html. His DRPM at ESPN is also very good: 3.48, which ranks 15th among 81 centers in the league; see http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/rpm/_/sort/DRPM/position/9. At his position, Bosh is a vastly superior defender than TJones whose DRPN, for example, is -1.91, 84th of 90 PFs in the league. Bosh is a defensive force for the Heat because he's often paired with LeBron (a poor defender) and Ray Allen (a very poor defender). For those who wish to verify this, visit the three basketball sources listed above.
Edit: Bosh's DefRtg, DRPM, and Defensive x-RAPM are 2nd best on the team and the best of the starting five. Sorry for the mistake. Chris Andersen is not a starter.
Any Otis Thorpe types out there? <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Bxc5-u02Jq0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
[rquoter]It's not my strength and I understand that.[/rquoter] If only Dwight would realize the same thing and run the PnR at all times, the Rockets may have something. Kudos to Bosh for understanding what he does well and not letting peer pressure turn him into something he's not.
I don't think Lebron is a poor defender, but he doesn't always go all out in the regular season. This kind of stuff happens when we are talking about defending champs and elite teams with veteran rosters. Need to conserve energy especially considering these teams played 20+ extra playoff games last season.
RockingRox, I put you in a minority of 1 for not wanting to pay Bosh more than 10M, not for wanting to let TJ develop defensively. Though I'm not in your camp, you definitely have company in your opinion. As far as Bosh being a Rocket any time soon, I don't think we can get him. I would love to have Bosh for his veteran leadership & defense at the 4, hopefully for less than his current 19M. Yes, I was surprised that TJ's PER & Rebounds were better!
I don't know Carl. You could be right. No way to know for sure. But via the naked eye, it does look like he's playing good defense but that is not manifested in the stats. Looking solely at his DefRtg via nba.com http://stats.nba.com/teamPlayers.ht...de=PerGame&SeasonType=Playoffs&Season=2013-14. In 2011-2012, he was at 97.0 in the Regular Season and 97.5 during the playoffs. In 2012-2013, he was 99.3 in the Regular Seasons and 101.1 in the Playoffs. This season, 2013-2014, he was 103.5 in the Regular Seasons and is currently at 104.9 in the playoffs. Funny thing is, the Heat team is collectively just not as good defensively this year as in the past. Over the last three seasons, the Heat team DefRtg has systematically worsened from a very good 98.5 in 2011-2012 to 99.8 (good) in 2012-2013 to 104.8 this season (very poor). Lebron's 2013-2014 Regular Season Defensive xRAPM is -0.80 (unimpressive) via http://stats-for-the-nba.appspot.com/teams/MIA.html and his DRPM is currently -0.22 (41st of the 80 SFs in the league; see http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/rpm/_/page/2/sort/DRPM/position/5). I couldn't find any xRAPM and DRPM stats for previous seasons. But there's no way to know if he's taking plays off as he ages. Afterall, his teammate, Bosh, admitted to taking plays off (in this very thread), and, DWade takes scores of games off due to his ailing knee. There's no stat to measure taking plays off. I have no stats to prove it and he never said it but I still believe that Harden takes multiple plays off on defense to focus on his offense. He hinted at this in multiple interviews, although it was a "riddled confession". But it makes sense to me; noone could be that bad defensively without a very good reason.
Chris Bosh tells ESPN Radio he will return to Heat next season <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Bosh says he is definitely coming back to Miami next year, but doesn't want to get into that conversation right now.</p>— Jason Lieser (@PBPjasonlieser) <a href="https://twitter.com/PBPjasonlieser/statuses/471680599590043649">May 28, 2014</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
So I guess that's a given that the big 3 are opting in for the last year for one more go around. Honestly.... They are on the verge of three peating... Why the hell would you want to break that up? Bosh was the one guy who would benefit the most financially from opting out and getting paid a contract he won't get with Miami next go around. This coming from him is pretty telling of where their minds are at... Which is keeping the band together as long as they are still able to.
Makes sense for Bosh to be the stretch 4 or 5. When you have dominate players like Lebron and (sometimes now) Wade , it makes sense you want to keep the middle of the paint as open as possible.
Damn, Bosh would look nice in a Rockets uniform. I rate him better for the team over Love, who I also like. Stretch the floor and played great D.
What happens in Miami ultimately depends on what Lebron decides. If Lebron stays, so does Bosh, if he doesn't, all bets are off.
They are in the critical moments of a title run, what else is he supposed to say? Anything can happen in the offseason.
