I thought they were in the second season...? Baron Cohen is funny, I like him. I liked him in Talladega nights and in Da Ali G Show. But the lengths they went to for this movie was just wrong.
It is just a movie. Why is everyone getting their panties in a bunch? News flash: There are poor people in the world. He paid them money to stand around and have a good time. This is just an example of some lawyer trying to make money. Personally, I feel that what the lawyers are doing is much worse than what the movie did. Some people on here really crack me up.
1. The people are complaining that Cohen's intentions in filming them were misrepresented to them. How would they know that until the movie comes out? 2. If it had been a flop and the production company had no money to extract, it would be pretty dumb to pay a bunch of legal fees knowing there was no money to collect to compensate you for the trouble. That's when you have to resort to keying Cohen's car, or what have you. Which is fine, because the damage to your reputation is less anyway, because no one saw the movie anyhow.
he has been on in britian since the mid 90's with da ali g talk show. I believe it's still on. yes making fun of the villagers wasn't very nice but I thought the worst part was when they stayed at the old jewish couple's house. I really felt bad for them cause they were so nice.
good lord, some of you people suck. poor gypsies in romania get paid for doing nothing, and you people feel bad for them??? what kind of reputation do you think they had to begin with? that's like a pedophile getting upset at someone calling him a murderer.
I don't see the big deal. It's a work of fiction, and wasn't even presented as its real location. For all the fuss other countries are making over this movie, it's hillarious that the one painted in the most unflattering light (USA) has generally given the warmest response.
and this is the price Sacha Baron Cohen willingly paid to win the box office and the critical acclaim. This is typical fad humor, every once in a while something new comes along and it becomes hysterically funny. Intentional humor has been around for a long time, but more celebrated in England. Controversial crude humor has been en vogue since Kevin Smith's films gained cult status. This is basically Kevin Smith meets Monty Python. I admit the film was very funny and I think it was the funniest movie of the year by far.
Mr Cohen . .is that you? I figure it is since My statement is obviously a personal affront to you . . so much so That you felt then need try to try and insult me but oh well I shouldn't expect anything better from you by now Rocket River
Some 15 minutes. He's been famous before, famous during, and will be famous after. I think he just signed a $42 million deal with a studio for the Bruno movie, half of that being the production cost, the other half his salary and he gets 15 percent of the reciepts. Bruno is a gay Austrian reporter who makes homophobes uncomfortable. Personally, I don't know how good a movie with that will be. Bruno seems pretty one dimensional. Borat and Ali G can be used on all kinds of people to expose all kinds of faults and backwards beliefs. Bruno seems to only be good for homophobes. Plus, he may be too well known to do Bruno now.
I agree completely. And man, someone must really have it in for Cohen now. Funny how it seems to be in to try and sue him and share in the wealth. I don't really get how they were supposed to be 'taken advantage of'. They aren't even portrayed as the same country in the film. Most would not even make the connection.
Why is all of the outcry about him making fun of the poor Romanian villagers. Did he take less advantage of the high society folks or the people at the mega-church? These people were just standing in for a fictional Kazakh village, and the end product was hilarious.
I don't mind the whole "bad image" thing. I mean it's not their village that is depicted bad. It's a fictional town in Kazakhstan. But on the flip side, I don't mind the lawsuit either. These villagers got paid 3 euros each for their cooperation. If they were background actors, it'd be more like $50-100 a day. So the Borat people did kind of take advantage of them. So I don't have a problem with a poor village trying to squeeze a bit more money out of a film that's surely going to make over $100 million dollars. They'll settle this out of court, those villagers will get a few extra dollars for their cooperation ($20, 30, 50 dollars each. Whatever.), Borat will get a bit more free publicity (like they even need it), and that will be that. No big deal.
