Rumor of War - Phillip Caputo. Really doesn't count though since it's for school.... since....ya know school books don't count... but past few series I've read are some good ones are well: High Druid of Shannara Series (Terry Brooks, 3 books) The Dark Tower Series (Stephen King, a damn good series, 7 books)
I just got started on Roth's "I Married a Commuinist" with "Human Stain" waiting in the wings. Roth is one of the best writers ever. I will have to see if my library has the latest one from him that you are reading. I am also 2/3 of the way through Phillip Pullman's Dark Materials series and it is fantastic! "Northern Lights" and "The Subtle Knife" are superb. I don't normally go in for fantasy fiction, but Pullman comes highly reccomended as the best and most ambitious writer of his type since Tolkein...I would be inclined to agree if I read more books like this.
Gore Vidal rules! Nice selection! Is that the one that goes into the Axial Age and Zoroastrianism? What do you think?
I bought number 4 in the series- The Gods of War and I found it to be a satisfying conclusion to the series.
Yeah, I loved American Pastoral. Haven't read either of those, but I did see the Human Stain film. The Plot Against America is downright horrifying so far.
I just finished "Scuse Me While I Whip This Out" by our next governor, Kinky Friedman. Freaking hilarious!
Just finished reading: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Now I'm working on Kite Runner
The Flounder by Gunther Grass after which, i want to read something really thick (3 or more books) & would like suggestions: already read all the Harry Potters, Eragon & Eldest, all the Dunes, all the Vanpire Chronicles I am interested in following the protagonist for more than just 1 book
I read this not too long ago - I won't give anything away until you've finished it, so we can talk about it more later. I just finished The Manticore by Robertson Davies, which is the 2nd book in his Depthord trilogy. I really enjoyed it and am going back to re-read the first book Fifth Business (which I read about 20 years ago) before moving onto the 3rd book Worlds of Wonder. Highly recommended. I also read V for Vendetta, which is a comic book by Alan Moore and is going to be a movie with Natalie Portman this spring. A bit clumsy (like most comic books with a "message"), but the art is beautiful and it does have some interesting parallels to our current times. I tried rereading Rabbit, Run by Updike recently, and found the characters so annoying that I gave up. I have no idea how I got through this in college. I read some murder mystery not too long ago, but I don't even remember it's title. Typical pulp fair - nothing to recommend.
Just finished Scar Tissue, Anthony Kiedis' (Chili Peppers' lead singer) autobiography. Not very well written, but damn that mofo was (is) a junky. I was truly shocked by his level of drug use. He's been through rehab multiple times, gone cold turkey even more times, and stopped for as long as 5 years before back sliding. It's a miracle that he is still alive and didn't kill anyone else along the way.
Almost done with The Smartest Men in the Room (Enron book) and I've just started The Secret of Mojo: The Story of the Odessa Permian High School Football Team. Don't laugh, I loves me some West Texas high school football, baby! This book picks up when the school was first built and leaves off right before Friday Night Lights picks up. Great read so far.
gwayneco....not yet, but soon. One of my closest friends, who has known Kinky for over 35 years, is threatening to get me one for Hannukah! Last Hannukah he gave me a gift-pack of Kinky's salsas (which were damn tasty, by the way)
Sounds good. I'm at the point where the family is facing the move to Kentucky under the Homestead 42 act. I wish I could just take the rest of the day off to read it. Makes my trips to the library long.
