I don't know what Clinton is responsible for or not. But I'm pretty sure some of the problems we're dealing with now extend at least as far back as Clinton's administration. These are not problems that have cropped up overnight. Again, I'm not really trying to assign blame, but I certainly don't think it can be avoided solely on the claim that he's been out of office for awhile.

    * How the Monica Lewinsky and fundraising scandals, as well as a consuming desire to be re-elected, prevented Clinton from waging a war on terror and bin Laden and prevent 9/11.

From the Drudge exerp of the book.

YOu know it didn't take a brain surgeon to realize that the Repubescent focus on Clinton,s genitals and impeachmen could have distracted him from Bin Laden.

A horrible/funny thought. Just imagine if you would burden Dubya's mind with the details of his sex life and impeachment and then wanted him to concentrate on the details of governing at the same time?

Aww c'mon. Bush's brain isn't that big. He wouldn't be able to handle an all-out assault on his private life while trying to govern at the same time. Hell, he can't even eat pretzels and watch a football game at the same time!

First of all it was the Clinton administration that brought Clarke and the group on board. SEcondly he proposed all the same exact measures to the Bush administration who all did nothing. Not only that Clinton more than doubled the amount of defense spending going toward fighting terrorism. Rumsfeld threatened a Bush veto when congress wanted to take money from the missle defense plan and use it to fight terrorism.

So the record comparing the two administration is as follows:

Clinton puts together a team lead by Clarke that advocates sending special forces on the ground in Afghanistan to go after OBL, increases defense spending on fighting terrorism, advocates cutting off the funding to terrorists from bogus charities, and just about all the things we are doing now.

Bush administration is presented with the same plan of going after OBL(they are presented the plan by the team that CLinton put together) and they do nothing until after 9/11. The adminstration also threatens veto when congress proposes using a portion of money for the missle defense plan in fighting terrorism.

But somehow it's the Clinton administration that's to blame.

Those are just the facts. My own personal feeling is that none of the administrations did enough to fight terrorism.

As Oski pointed out, Clinton was never really offered OBL. The deal wasn't credible and when they went to Sudan with the deal it wasn't legit.

The offer of OBL to Clinton has been exposed as a myth. It wasn't just in Franken's book either. The Joe Connasen book also exposes the myth.
