Did you not read MacBeth's post? The Grizzlies are doing a good job. The thing about Portland is that if they want to get rid of "bad guys" then they'd wouldn't have a second string. Battier is alright. We need a PF. Actually we need a PG.
Person comes off the books at season's end, I think, and there is a #1. Not so bad a deal. Talent edge goes to Memphis, along with crazy and roster questions.
Uh, so what? Just because they like to play a bunch of guys doesn't mean they need a THIRD quality swingman.
Also Bonzi can play 2&3 so he can be starting with Miller and have Posey and Battier as backups. That sounds good to me for giving up Wesley Person.
Mike Miller will be getting more minutes at the backup PG position from here on out. The problem with our 'depth' at the swing positions is that none of them are natural scorers. Bonzi fits that mold and he gives an option on the block posting up.
Good move for Memphis. Memphis will eventually consolidate their talent, two (goods) for ones (great), until they are a more conventional team. They have a plethora of young talent and once they start consolidating, they will be scary! I like this move for the Grizz and hate this move for the Rockets (sake). Seems like I'm always saying that about the Grizz. Oh well, at least, IF EG beats the rap, solves his mental condition, is allowed to play for the Rockets, is signed by the Rockets, cracks the rotation, learns (again, like in NCAA) to be a banger in the post, improves his circle of influence, stays off the left handed cigs, is focused and determined (farbeit from emotional).....out of breath.........then we'll have (just) one more quality player. D@mn that's a bunch of conditions!!! The lack of our last few drafts' first rounders, sans Yao (obviously) and Boki, to a degree, is really rearing its ugly head. I'm worried that we won't have the ammuntion down the road to land the final piece(s) when it's our turn to contend. If EG is cut (not matched, assuming he lands an NBA contract) by the Rockets, we are very short on the big P...and it takes that and a good contract to do a deal.
Reasonable trade for both teams. Portland probably gets a mid to late lotto and an expiring contract. Bonzi can be explosive but is injury prone, a knuckhead and not much of a team player--certainly not someone I think the Rockets should have had much interest in. This deal does make me wonder if we could have done a lot better with the Rice deal. That trade exception better come in handy or that will suck.
I don't see why some people wish the rox coulda landed bonzi. Sure the guy is hella talented, but he's a freaking headcase. Spitting on players, flipping the bird, not giving a **** about the fans, cussing out the coach ... yeah, that's the kind of player the rox need, he'd fit right in and help this team gel. I think it's a fair trade and Memphis doesn't get significantly better as some might think. For portland its addition by subtraction, something they needed to start doing a while back.
Damn! Top 3? That's a bit rich. Granted, it looks like Memphis will be in the late lottery this year, but leaving the door open to giving up a 4 through 7 pick or so, is dangerous. Probably more than what Wells is worth.
Is there anyone in next years draft at that pick range that will give you Wells numbers - the Grizzlies (and I) say no. The gamble is will he clean up in Memphis.
That's what i was thinking. Also, does that protection deminish in later years? This is the team that lost a #2 for Otis Thorpe.
Sometimes your lucky, sometimes your not. Who knows, the pick could also be 12-13-14-15-16, where at least it is hard to find a player as talented as Wells. I am with CK though--I would want no part of Wells as a Rocket, we have enough trouble getting all the guys we currently have on the same page.
