Did he really gain 58 pounds?!?!?! How can you even work that off in a season? That's a whole lot of weight to gain over the course of 4 months or so. Wow.

Will this fat azz get a least a chance. I think he will. I think JVG is a smart guy before a disciplinarian.

He will give Bozi a chance, and if Bozi doesnt deliver, then he will be shipped out in no time.

I still think JVG should not be blamed for this one. When they signed Wells, there are 4 possibilities:
    1. He is in shape and played well, that's great.
    2. He's in shape, tried hard but doesn't fit Rockets system. Then JVG should be blamed for poorly utilizing him.
    3. He's in shape but doesn't want to fit the system. Still a good signing, at least he can't play for other teams.
    4. He's out of shape and can't produce. That's all Bonzi's fault.

Looks like it's #4 here. JVG is right not to play him, 6-3 is still better than 4-5.

We need Bonzi to be a title contender.

Bonzi is a bonehead, but he has talent and can do damage--just see last year's playoffs series with the Spurs.

Great coaches find a way to get something out of knucklehead players. Phil J got Rodman working well enough in the system. He kept the Shaq-Kobe marriage functional enough for 3+ years. He even got the total nut Bison Dele to contribute to a title. Pat Riley got Williams and Payton and Walker--all knuckleheads in one way or the other, to bond on a common mission.

Yes Bonzi is a knucklehead. We knew that. That is why we got him cheap, cheap, cheap, relative to his talent and skill.

It is a test of JVG to bring Wells into the fold, and yes us being title contenders (barring another major move) depends on it. Yao and Tmac do not have sufficient help at this point. We have designed the team to "win-now", damn the egos and coaches making points, find a common goal at keast to weather this season. This is a COACHES job!

I was not a big Bonzi fan but to play devils advocate for one second, would you want an out of shape Bonzi on the floor against the Spurs or even tonights game where he would've been beat on the defensive side of the ball? It would be scary to think what kind of minutes Bonzi would've had during the Rockets drought. Rockets might not have pulled out a win? I would at least put Bonzi in when there is a blowout in garbage time. That's the least JVG could do.

Actually... fact is Bonzi has played in two games for us, and he looked good in neither. He's sluggish. I'd rather have Snyder, Head, V-Span, Novak... practically anyone but Bonzi out there if he's not in shape. I did not see how he "helped us out" so much in those games.

I just thought of something. Bonzi could be used for foul situations since he's so fat. Use him to bump and foul ala hack a shaq. hehehehehe ;)

You guys making fun of our saviour? This is a joke right? Just because he isn't in shape now and not gettin paid..that won't help his motivation to hit the gym. But I heard he was on the bicycle during the game

is it only me, or do y'all think that this quote is just hilarious ??
"I came to play basketball, not to run a marathon"

well, not really, it's pretty sad actually.. it's makes me feel bad about the great time I had celebrating the signing of Bonzi and predicting a championship now that we have added the missing piece...

but it all comes to one guy, JVG, and if he screws up, kinda like what he's been doing recently, he will mess up the whole team..

I dont know what happened to me! I was a big fan of JVG, I found it ridiculous to bash him and blame him for our poor performances..I had a strong defensive stance supporting JVG in the Fire GUndy I, Fire Gundy II, and Fire Gundy III threads of last year... now I feel like an idiot for defending him in the past..

As I posted in another thread, I'd like to propose the ideal solution: The Blair Wells Project:

    THE BLAIR WELLS PROJECT

In October of 2006, three professional basketball players disappeared in the woods near Huntsville, TX, while shooting a documentary..a year later their footage was found.

(The three players- Bonzi, Dikembe, and Shane, have been filming a documentary as part of a bonding project assigned by their coach Jeff Van Gundy. After several days, they are completely lost, their map isn’t helping them at all, and food supplies are running low, making Bonzi extremely agitated)

DIKEMBE: “Hey, who have my map? You take it, Shane? You have it, Bonzi?”
BONZI: “You know what, I kicked the f**kin’ map into the river…I mean, it wasn’t doing anything for us.”
DIKEMBE: “What?!? Maybe it didn’t mean anything to you, but it MEANT SOMETHING TO ME!!! I still don’t know this stupid country.”
SHANE: “Guys, it’s OK, it’s OK, it’s OK. I think this whole experience is just really keen.”

    (The next morning)

BONZI: “Guys, they’re some kind of slime on my pack…what is that stuff…”
    DIKEMBE: “Smells like doughnut glaze.”
SHANE: “Wow, whoever put that on did a superduper job.”
BONZI: “Yeah, but why is it only on my pack?”
DIKEMBE: “Because they are trying to tell you something. They eat you next.”
SHANE: “Now, guys, let’s not get antagonistic. Let’s keep a neat perspective on everything.”

(The next morning, still dark outside)

    DIKEMBE: “Hey, where’s Bonzi?”
SHANE: “Bonzi! Bonzi! Tell me where you are, Bonzi!”
DIKEMBE: “Hey, look there’s a house over there. Let’s go see if he’s there.”

    (In the house)

SHANE: “Hey, I hear him downstairs. Bonzi! Bonzi! OMG! WHAT THE HECK IS THAT?!?”
DIKEMBE: “That’s Bonzi, you dummy. He’s peeing in the corner.”
SHANE: “Oh, for a minute I thought…I thought they were going to line us up and kill us while he was facing the wall.”
DIKEMBE: “You Americans watch too many independent movies. Hey, Bonzi, put the dingaling back in your pants and let’s get the hell out of here. We got to play the Spurs tonight.”
BONZI: “Aight, aight. Man, I swear I saw some evil looking MF that looked just like Coach Van Gundy. Scared the piss out of me- I’m definitely getting back into shape now!”
SHANE: “Aww, shucks, you’re just imagining things. Let’s get out of here- the Boy Scouts never prepared me for anything like this!”
    DIKEMBE: “Agreed.”
    BONZI: “F**in A right!”

(As they leave, a dark, mysterious, bald-headed creature emerges from the shadows)

JVG: “He, he, scared the crap out of all 3 of them. Maybe now that fat excuse for a player will be scared into getting in shape. Doughnut glaze- ha, a nice touch. Wait till next week when Vassilis, Steve, and John come out here. I hate rookies.”

Bonzi is not in shape is a given when the Rockets sign him. No player is in good shape when they dont have a contract.

Bonzi is a knucklehead is also a given. So, I dont know why JVG didnt pass on him when he only gets 1 way to treat a player.

Bad jockey cant ride Seabiscuit because Seabiscuit wanted to kick his ass. And we get a bad jockey here in JVG. Just want to see what Phil can do with Bonzi. Yeah, trade Bonzi to LA.

I'm probably repeating whats already been said but oh well.. Okay so EVERYONE KNEW Bonzi wasn't a model citizen and should not have expected him to be some great guy. So:

__Shouldn't MANAGEMENT have known that as well? That's a fair question. If we the fans know of course management's and coaching is gonna know. So why the hell did they sign him? Them bringing Bonzi in and giving him the hard line doesn't make sense given his repuataton, why even bother. Sign a hard working scrappy guy you can count on and be done with it.

__Maybe Van Gundy's taking an examplarary stance on this and being fair to his team. But an exception was pretty much made I think once Bonzi became a Rocket. Plus if every player that started the season not in great shape were sat down, a third of the league would be on the inactive list.

__Its okay to to sign in some rusted ex-Knick from his living room the middle of the season and give him minutes on the court (Mark Jackson, Strickland), but not a younger better free agent Bonzi starting the season with the team?

OR, a lot of us are just misinformed and Bonzi's not participating and being the laziest pig ever and we're just not seeing it. Van Gundy has played him twice giving him some looks and just didnt like what he saw I guess...

Good point cmellon. You can's imagine in a company, everyone is of the same personality. A good manager should be able to handle the variety and take advantage everyone's strength.

I'm not saying fire JVG but I think he has to let his players do their own things with compromise. The fact is Phil Jackson handled any drama between Shaq and Kobe and let the drama unfold while still being able to have both players play at their peak.

Let's not forget he also coached Dennis Rodman and all the freaky stuff he did in his NBA tenure. Then handled primadona Pippen in his prime as well as Jordan who isn't the saint people make him out to be. The man punched out players on practice courts like Steve Kerr yet you won't hear any repurcusion from the likes of Jackson regarding Jordan's competitive nature in demanding greatness from his teammates. The point being is while I think Phil Jackson is overrated as a tactical coach he's always been fantastic at handling egos and getting some of the biggest egotistical players to atleast stick to the gameplan of winning.

Rudy T also had to deal with the likes of Hakeem who got in many fights early in his career, and fought over his contract and threatened to sit out the rest of a regular season. Don't forget Vernon Maxwell who wasn't called Mad Max for nothing. Egos come with the territory of acquiring big name players and coaches have to find ways to handle them and make them want to be coached.

I wish JVG would do the same and swallow his pride and be open to comprise so Bonzi can play on the court. Yes the blame should be shared with Bonzi for rocking the boat too, but from the sounds of it, it doesn't even sound like JVG is trying to make it work.
