There is nothing sanctified about baseball and never has been - there have been cheaters and liars and greed and scandal for hundreds of years. Baseball is high on sanctimoniousness, not so high on sanctity. It is a business that is used to make money.
Your logic is awful. So any criticism of someone who has accomplished 'something' means I'm 'getting worked up?
your logic is idioic, barry bonds and paris hilton have nothing in common, if you can't comprehend that I feel sorry for you
Sure he does - Babe wasn't an altar boy by no means. But how he treats his wife or wives and being an overall jerk had nothing to do with the discussion that I had with IROC it. I was just stating that IROC it's comment that the Babe using alcohol helped him is ridiculous since alcohol would hinder an athlete more than helping him, especially compared to steroids. Look, pgabriel, I have no problem with Barry Bonds being one of the greatest players of all-time. I felt he was that even before he got on roids. But he is not a better player than Babe Ruth overall - not even close. And then you have Jesus saying he is the greatest hitter ever?? Laughable - that would probably be either Ted Williams or Ty Cobb. I have only talked about Babe because you have people running around here thinking that Bonds is the greatest ever just because he broke the home run record. He is great (even without having help from roids), but not the greatest ever. And he is an ass as was the Babe. But I doubt the Babe was an ass to the media like Barry is. I do find it amusing that you never responded to my post about Bonds cheating on his wife (actually wives) and this is the best you can do. Do a random guerilla post on me and baiting and switching by bringing up Babe Ruth. Relationships of Greatest Baseball Player Ever Babe Ruth >>> Barry Bonds Relationships of Biggest Assholes Ever Barry Bonds >> Babe Ruth
first of all why do you care about how bonds' treats the media, number two if you think bonds' is the first athlete or only athlete, or one of few athletes who have cheated on their wives then I don't know what to say. edit: I did mention beating his wife but that's a far cry from cheating.
No, that was just a question intended to be inflammatory since Bonds/Vick/O.J. really have nothing in common except the color of their skin.
Babe Ruth began his playing career nearly 100 years ago in what was essentially an entirely different sport than the one that is played now. There aren't really enough quality films of his playing nor is there sufficient documentation as to his behavior as to whether or not he was an ******* to make too much of a meaningful comparison between the two. I have little doubt that if he was constantly getting into drunken bar brawls and beating his wife in 2007 vs. back in 1927 that his iconography would suffer a good deal.
it kills me that in general people think athletes are worse today than they were in the past as far as people. the only things that has changed in athletics is money and media coverage.
Deserves an * in my opinion. Was a great player before roids, but just became ridiculous (like McGwire and Sosa) after roiding up.
The saddest part about this is the great players in the steroid era that did not take steroids have there accomplishments diminished because they are being compared to freaks of nature. In the 90's Ken Griffey Jr. was almost universally considered the greatest player of his time -- not Bonds -- but then Bonds roided up and Griffey suffered a series of injuries.
barry would be an all time great if he never touched steroids. Barry is a jerk. (I use to defend him but at a certain point you cant defend the indefensible) The home run record means less than it did...say 5 years ago. I think those 3 statements are about as factual as it gets. true. Back then players had to work in the offseason, wore wool unis in the summer, had inferior equipment (both on and off the field), and much larger ball parks. there is a lot of documentation about babe. The guy was followed religiously by the media. He was a womanizer and over indulged in a lot (from food to women), but the man was still good to a lot of people and people loved him because he was so charismatic.
I don't care. I'm just trying to explain to you, pgabriel, why so many people dislike Bonds. You are the one who has been acting incredulous that so many people dislike Bonds and feel that he is an *******. Then you mention specifically that Barry doesn't take drugs or beats his wife. Yet I respond with the fact that he has admitted to taking the clear and the cream (anabolic steroids) and it was strongly suggested that he has taken HGH. I also mention that he has cheated on his wife (and actually BOTH of his wives) with Kimberly Bell who was his mistress from 1994 to 2003. I also found through a quick google search (probably took 10 seconds) that Bonds' first wife, Sun, testified in their divorce hearings that Barry kicked her down some stairs. So, what I posted yesterday was tame in what evidence is out there. The bottom line is that the guy has acted like an ******* for some time and seems to revel in it. I'm sorry that a person like Bonds is one that I can't root for. If you can't respect my feeling about that and want to keep arguing for the sake of arguing, I don't know what to say.
apparently you do care. what i don't understand is how you can prop up babe ruth when you admit the same things about him. as far as the steroids, he has never tested positive so if you want to hold that belief that's fine. I'll respect his achievement edit: no one has denied he may or may not be a jerk. if the argument goes down to who you root for that's fine. but I don't feel he deserves extra venom because I don't feel he's extra villianous. the only reason you know about his transgressions and not some career .230 hitter, its because of his greatness.
