If this is true then that settles it. Now there's basically no reason not to match this offer. At worst it's an expiring contract next year.
Team option on the third? Nice! Three million is on the upper boundary of what I thought Carl was worth, but I'd match in a heartbeat.
Don't forget, this is a business. Lez knows how bad most people want Landry back. He wants the fans to have good things to say about the team because the more popular the team is the more $$$ he makes. 9 million for 3 years isn't that huge of a risk for an NBA contract even if landry's knee blows up. If dorsey becomes better then you can always trade Landry for a high pick to some crappy team. This isn't a Mo Taylor or Cato type of contract that going to haunt the club for 10 years.
exactly. easy to move if it doesn't workout. expires in the summer of 2010 (if the rockets don't pick up the team option), allowing them to maintain cap flexibility. sign him. sign dorsey. sign deke. move steve or luther at the deadline for a TE and a second round pick to get under lux-tax.
I question the fandom of all these people willing to let Carl walk over such a reasonable deal. No one who has watched the likes of Mo Taylor, Kelvin Cato, and Eddie Griffin for any amount of time would be against signing a guy like Landry for so little. The guy has skills, and heart, and was a crucial cog for us last season. He may not get many minutes because of our depth, but keeping him just further solidifies our roster and will reduce any damage done by injuries. And to say that Dorsey can replicate Landry's scoring is ridiculous. He can't run like Landry, can't finish in as many ways, can't maneuver in the paint, and can't hit freethrows.
“Landry is an emerging NBA talent, as evidenced by his play over the final 42 regular-season games and into the Rockets first-round playoff appearance,” Higgins said. “His ability to play both the power forward and center position will complement our post play.” center position? landry can't play center for any team...unless its a wnba team...
I would have balked at $3 mil for 3 yrs, but 2 years with a team option for a 3rd is doable. I was hoping $2.5 for 2 yrs. Morey will git er dun. Welcome back Carl. Scolandry lives!!!
I'm guessing that any last-minute salary dump would not net the Rockets anything worthwhile. If anything, the Rockets might be the ones giving up future second rounders just for the RIGHT to dump Francis's salary. Of course, this doesn't factor in that Francis or Head (or whoever) has a productive year.
This is exactly what Morey has been waiting for, ie for another team to set the market price. Now it's up to Landry to accept, so the Rockets can match.
true. i was just stating my hopes, not my realistic guess. although, in the case of moving luther (a young shooter) a team might actually be interested in adding him for a Te and might be willing to part with a second rounder.
Feigen blogs about it here: http://blogs.chron.com/nba/2008/09/time_to_play_match_game_rocket.html [rquoter] Match the offer. It's not a no-brainer. It's not an easy call to make. But before media day on Monday, the Rockets need to send the offer sheet Carl Landry signed back to the Bobcats and say that they will be keeping Landry. He got himself a good deal, $9 million over three years, the last season at the team's option. The Rockets had offered about $5.4 million. The contract the Bobcats offered would put the Rockets' over the luxury tax line and adding Joey Dorsey will push them even further into tax territory. Do it, anyway. The Rockets have put together contender-caliber roster. It's time (a much better slogan than Get Red, by the way) to think short term. Daryl Morey can spend the next 4 ½ months trying to work his way under the luxury tax line as the Rockets did at mid-season each of the past two seasons. For now, adding Landry at $3 million a year is an expensive, but solid investment given the potential the Rockets believe this season holds. ... [/rquoter] He says that the greater concern for the Rockets won't be the luxury tax, but Landry's right knee. But, considering it will only be a 2 year guaranteed deal, the risk is not great.
On the surface it seems like an easy option to match but then Marquis Daniels and Shareef Abdur-Rahim come to mind. And the Bobcats have had a horror run at picking up PFs...
nice, finally landry will sign with the rox. If rox can offer 5.4m for 2 years, i believe rox can offer 9m for 3.
And since the third year is a team option, the deal isn't that much different. They were allegedly doubling up our offer. But going from 5.4 to ~6 million for two years doesn't seem like a big deal.
