I love Sura except when he shooting that fugly 3 point shot. As long as he isnt shooting that, I love his hustle and other benefits.
but failing to reach perfection is a perfect reason to bash someone. btw, I think Bowen and Padgett are in due time for a group criticism from us elite clutch bball analysts.
He seems to around the action, so he's probably much needed given our passive tendenncies. I don't cring when he's out there. And anybody notice we finish a fast break this year. woo hoo!
From what I observed, Andre Barret is a better point guard than Sura as a floor general. He knows where and when to pass and pass the ball. Sura is a SG asked to fill a PG role. For the players we have right now. Why don't we start Barret at the point, Sura SG, TMac SF, Howard PF, Yao C. Wesley and Barry off the bench to sub sura and AB.
he seems like a nice spark off the bench...i would still like to have a PG who is a 3pt threat out there since there is a lot of open looks created by our two superstars. IMO tmac and wesley should be the starting backcourt with sura and barry off the bench. of course we have no small foward to make that possible, but i'm still crossing my fingers that CD can find a small foward in return for mo or juwon. this summer i would like to see one of our PF's traded for a 3, and the MLE used on a PF. also barry and deke should be resigned for 2 more years.
Someone who is 5'8" cannot start in the NBA, especially not for our team considering Bobby Sura (who would be undersized at the position) would be playing the 2.
For some reason, I thought Wesley's contract was up after this season. I still think we'll make a run for Daniels, but if Sura and Wesley are still under contract, I could see us go through the offseason without acquiring a guard if mgmt feels like none are available without overpaying.
You are saying Andre Barrett is as good as Calvin? Obviously there are rare exceptions, and I think it is safe to say Andre Barrett is nowhere near the talent Calvin Murphy was.
The Rockets' play picked up immediately after Sura came off his injury. For a guy with a surgically repaired back, he hasn't been hesitant AT ALL out there. One thing I do worry about is his knee. That sucker is going to need surgery. I can't convince myself that he's going to be able to finish out this season on one knee. If he goes down, we're stuck with our All-CBA star Barret and *shudder* Ward. That'd be, um, real bad. Sura brings tenacity, hustle, and rebounding to the team. Not to mention that he occassionally goes off for 20+ points. Great pickup; hope he can stay on the court.
Yeah, last game he had too many turnovers. Which is why he got benched early. But then Denver went on a run, and his energy & aggression were both greatly appreciated. I don't like it when he turns the ball over, but I think Bobby Sura was a great offseason pickup.
Sura's only problem is that he's not a good shooter and most people underrate rebounding around here, he's an excellent rebounder. Three things are neccesary for you to win the NBA offense, defense, and rebounding, some coaches think defense and rebounding are more important than offense.
Well, one of the reasons we have done better lately, and scoring more points lately, is that the players are, for the most part, finally figuring each other out, getting each other the ball in their 'sweet spots' - just look a Juwan Howard - his shot is pretty accurate, as long as it is coming from one of the top corners of the top of the arc.. by now we are seeing where the higher-percentage spots on the floor are for a lot of the players.. Padgett's is at the 45% angle to the basket on either side, from the 3-pt line.. TMac's is basically anywhere inside the building.. Wesley is pretty decent from everywhere, but especially so along the baseline.. But Sura started late, and when he finally did get back into the games, he really did not seem to want to take many shots. I just think he hasn't found his sweet spot here yet. He has a sweet little floater in the lane, and he can hit pretty well from the left baseline.. but his 3-pt shot is just erratic. I think he needs to really hit the practice floor for some extended time, and work with his coaches and teammates, so he can get really comfortable from his best spots, and so his teammates can know the best spots for him to be when they feed him for the shot, or for when he has to create a shot, to help him be in the best position to be able to do that. Once that happens, his shooting % should go up noticeably.
He's been a great pickup for the Rockets. We're not paying him that much compared to his contribution. His hustle give us an additional several possession every night and he plays his role well. For god sakes the guy leads the team in steals and averages almost 6 rebounds. He does this in about 30 minutes a game. I think that's pretty impressive. I'd love for him to be a better jump shooter but he's never been a consistent shooter and we knew that coming in. He's lived up to expectations though, he hustles and makes plays.
As some here have mentioned, Sura is a temporary solution for us since we don't have a good PG. Once we get one, or once we get a good SG, shift Wesley to PG, then Sura will be back to be on the bench, which is where he really belongs. Sura & Jon Barry are the excellent bench player who can provide instant energy off the bench.
That's it right there for Sura. Get him with the little floater in the lane or the short jumper (which for Sura is really more of a Mario Elie set shot). That's his scoring. Everything else is creating in the lane for his teammates. The only thing that the Rockets really need to do with him other than what they are doing now is to get him to cut to the rim off the double teams of Yao and TMac even more than he is doing.
littlefish, I think you've just been unlucky in the times you've seen Sura. From what I've seen of him, he runs the offense pretty respectably. For example, have you noticed that when he drives, he looks for guys near the basket to dish to? That gets us easy dunks and layups. Those easy baskets are something we rarely got with Steve, who would usually either finish (not a bad thing, but often more difficult) or kick it out to the 3-point line (not bad either, but not as reliable as a layup). This is my totally subjective opinion, but I find that you can often judge how good a team is by how many easy baskets they get (and conversely how few they give up). Sura definitely gives us more of the easy ones. Anyway, getting back a bit to the main topic. Sura's A/TO this year is 1.9, as somebody above already mentioned. In contrast, Steve's (even in the run and gun Orlando offense), is only 1.8. I'd say that's pretty good, given that you'd expect Steve (as a star player and a supposed "true" point) to be ahead. Last year, Steve, as our only real point guard, had a 1.68, in the same offense that Sura plays in now. (1.9/1.68) -1 = .13, so Sura is 13% more efficient, despite being slower and less athletic than Steve. I'd say you have to give a lot of the credit to his good decision making.
