Here's the medical retirement rule: http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#53 sura hasn't played in 15 months and said that there was enough evidence to support a medical retirement. he played for the rockets when he became injured, so it looks like we would definately get relief from his contract. there is no monetary incentive for him to play out his contract with the rockets, as he said, it would be for he love of the game. give the surgeries, rehab and work it would take to get back into an NBA game, i'm inclinded to take him at his word.
so why does allan houston's contract still count against the knick's cap. I don't think its that simple but thanks for posting the rule.
Ok guys and gals, there was a whole other thread a few days ago about that "wierd" workout... There were many theories floated (including a large number of posters proclaiming that it was set up to allow Sura an opportunity to announce his retirement that day!). Fortunately, those of us with media (and/or marketing) experience suggested exactly what several of your posts seem to be hinting at: The ROX are using Sura's "Rehab" and potential return as a "marketing" technigue to gin up excitement over a long, dry (Astro's suck ) summer, because Season TIX sales are down after a sub-par season last year, followed by major a outcry in the city (and here at CC.Net) on draft day (re: Gay/Battier). So, you take advantage of the flow of ROX media with the signing of Snyder, followed by Kill Bill, speculation about JL-III and now Sura... This takes the heat off of CD and JVG that "no moves have been made" and gives fans stuff to talk about and look forward to!! And, even if all other things were equal, and there were no marketing points to gain, the organization could still be seen as acting responsibly just by keeping the fans "informed" regarding the status of one of their favorite players!! I mean, jeesh, look at all the hullaballoo on the board just from a "workout" and a media "availability" for an update on Bobby's recovery. And for those of you doubters, I have strong confidence in Bobby's will to come back. He may get injured again before it's all said and done, but I'll take that bet; If Bobby is on the active roster, he'll wind up playing 20+ minutes per game, (and no, I"m not saying that will happen right from the first tip-off, but it will before the end of the season or he get's injured, whichever comes first... ) And, lastly, Old Man Rock - Are you kidding me about Bobby not having physical toughness? The dude is IMHO one of the meanest (not dirtiest) players in the league and that's why so many were comparing his play to Mario Elie, because they both would take on tough defensive assignments, shoot set shots AND play enforcer for the elite players on the team. I loves me some Bobby Sura!!
I agree, its not weird. a rockets fan should know how important bob is to the team. they are just trying to build excitement.
Sura will be forced to retire. Waived. Or Traded. Very soon. Back problems like his don't get better and once PG's have knee injuries they are never the same. He has the double whammy. The guy plays hard too. Hits the floor alot. That = triple whammy Hate to bust everyone's bubble. I am a Sura fan too. I think he is badly needed. But he is done with the Rockets.
I'm speculating, but I think it's largely dependent on the type of injury. Houston's "chronic knee soreness" apparently doesn't qualify. Sura stated in his interview with 610AM that there was sufficient documentation for him to qualify for a medical retirement which is why he was cognizant of the team's best interest. - I don't want to handcuff the team as far as them using my money if I'm not able to do it. I'm certain the Rockets have made this rule clear to Sura and his agent. Based on Sura's comments, that would appear to be the case. More from the Salary Cap FAQ, this time under disabled player exception, although I would imagine the league approval process would be similar... http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#19
Well Sura's Blue Lambroghini Murcielago Roadster with those horrendous wheels have been in a friends apartment garage for two days. Maybe he's rehabbing his back and knee with some of the ladies that live there.
Every time I see this thread title "Bob Sura to give it one more shot", I can't help but to end the title "WITH CORTIZONE". Sorry Bob don't end up like Earl Cambell. Retire while you still have money and can actually walk with your children for your and your childrens sake.......OK but most of all for the rockets sake.(the dreaded injury exception)
IC2000 - If you're in the Media or Sales office for the ROX, fine. If not, then I would ask that your justify your statement. Also, just to nitpick for a moment.... I used the word "technique" rather than the perjorative "ploy" - and in a separate paragraph qualified the former by saying that even "if" the ROX weren't employing strategy relative to fan/consumer relations, they would still be seen as a good coroporate citizen by keeping the consumer's/fans informed and hopefully, optimistic. Coming on the heels of the workout and media availability, as it so obviously did, it's highly doubtful that PR and Marketing types werent' at least consulted before info was put out to the local press on Bobby's workout. And don't forget, ALL MEDIA IS MARKETING!!!! (whether you want it to be or not....) So, unless your Liz Brown's brother, me thinks thou knowest not of which you speak... Anyway, I'm just doing my part to keep optimism up for one of my favorite players. GO BOBBY!!
Man, I thought I was the only one that got tired of reading IC2000's one liner. He gave people the impression that he was somewhat an insider, but didn't give any justification or further explanation to back up what he said. For example, during the MJ acquisition drama, IIRC he posted something like "No worries..." (I remember it was him. I apologize if it was somebody else). We all know how that turned out. To me those one liners only serve to stir up more speculations, and nothing more.
Funny, dude! I have respect for Sura, but I don 't think he could give the Rockets an other season like he did in 2004-2005 ... if he really wants to come back, it 's ok for me but as a "super druper veteran" that could teach the rookies how to play B-ball in the NBA and for 1 year off course!
Whoi is Liz Brown first of all? And who is her brother? You guys are wasting alot of energy and time on a player that WILL NOT PLAY FOR THE ROCKETS AGAIN!!!!! Sura is done. Sad but true.
