I like Sura, but even if this was possible it seems like a terrible idea. The guys who are playing now are going to give us the HCA. They deserve the minutes. I think a couple of players on the team would get pretty upset if they lost minutes in the playoffs to a guy who did not play a single game in the regular season. Unless that guy was named Yao or Tmac, it would affect team chemistry.
I'm like you man. I don't get it. We had players who were much better than Sura, like Jim Jackson, Mike James, and Cuttino Mobley. But they don't get this type of love. Honestly, I thought he was a good average role player nothing more. From the way people talk about him on this board you would think he was Earl Monroe or something. I liked the 04-05 team, but to get blow a 2-0 lead and get blowed out in a game 7 by 40 points. Showed you that team was not good enough to amount to anything great. That team needed to be changed and it was. You see lots of hustle 10-5-5 type guys across the lead, but I don't ever see the big deal with them. And beside over the long haul, he would not be as effective as Rafer. Sura was not this great unfounded jewel who would turn the franchise around, just look at how many teams he was on before he came to the Rockets. People want to bash and criticize Rafer to hell, but he has been doing his job. He is what he as an average point guard who can be an all-star on certain nights. He doesn;t
The Sura love just speaks to how bad we've had it regarding point guards. But no way in hell is Rafer better than Bob Sura. The last pure point guard this team ever had was in the 80s (John Lucas). So that says something, a whole generation of Lucases has made it through the Rockets and we still haven't had a good point guard. Sura was part of the reason why I liked watching the Rockets team 2 years ago more than this one. They had an identity back then that people enjoyed. Guys like Sura, Barry, James, etc.. had personalities and that too personalities to compensate for generally mellow guys like T-Mac and Yao. That type of stuff isn't tangible but it has an impact on our perception of players. Fact is Sura was a better PG than Rafer and he brought a lot to this team. And Rafer's abysmal play at times (that 37% or so field goal percentage isn't average, it's downright horrible and probably the worst among starting point guards) makes us long for days of yonder when we had a point guard who wasn't so incompetent when it comes to making shots and playing defense.
