This is too bad. He was really good for Tech and made them a legitimate basketball force. And he really hasn't had any problems - he's been a model of good behavior in his 2+ years there.
The only thing childish here is Knight's behavior. The Chancellor doesn't have a history of confrontations. Last month Knight tore into an ESPN reporter for "asking the wrong question". Knight could have disagreed with the Chancellor but he didn't have to make a big scene. I don't think he was treated like a kid. Your boss comes up to you and says "I'm proud of your behavior", do you start screaming, following, and embarassing him in front of everyone? He deserves to fired.
I hope this isn't true, because BK is the best college coach, period... Anger issues, sure, but you can't argue with the results...A 5 game suspension is BS and hopefully Myers can smooth things over...
Myers should also be ashamed. He was with Knight and he couldn't cool him down. If I'm the Chancellor, I put Knight and Myers on my F list. Knight today. Myers soon after. MUHAHAHAHA
Didn't Dickey lead them to an Elite Eight? When was the last time Knight got out of the first round? Once, during the SWC days. He also led them to a lot of non-tournament appearances and losing records. When Knight arrived, Tech was a nobody in college basketball. He's gotten them to the NCAA tourney twice with virtual scrub talent, and that team has gotten significantly better each of his years at Tech.
(more insider information for you) Overheard by the deli's on-call salad tosser. Smith: You know... I think you just put the italian dressing spoon into the bleu cheese container... I'm not sure where this fits into the conduct code, but I hate it when people do that. Knight: Oh, let me get this straight. Mr. garbanzo beans, cheese, and bacon bits needs a little more fat on his salad, so he doesn't want diluted bleu cheese dressing, right? Smith: You... You're out for two games! (walks back to table) Knight: Oh no! Hey! (follows Smith) You forgot your dressing! (carries bleu cheese vat to Smith's table) Hey tubby, yoo hoo, it's the fat train! Smith (wiping tears away with napkin): Five games!
So he's fired for making a scene? This isn't usual "I'm proud of your behavior", if you realize how sensitive he is about it.
I'm sorry, but I hate Bobby Knight. He is a cancer on a great game who is allowed a constant pass on his ridiculous, child-like antics. Grow up, Coach. My Dad told me a story that he heard from the late Bill Musselman (I miss the guy, he was a great person), when he was coaching South Alabama, who coached against Knight and beat the legend at home (while Muss was coaching another program) when Knight was coaching IU. Later that night, Muss was driving back to the hotel and he saw a red-faced Knight trudging through the snowdrifts. He asked him if he needed a ride and Knight replied "Go **** yourself, Muss..." Coach Musselman told my Dad he realized that he wasn't such an intense individual after that incident.
ESPN Texas Tech coach Bob Knight has been suspended for five days, a result of his verbal confrontation with university chancellor David Smith on Monday at a grocery store in Lubbock, ESPN's Dick Vitale reports. Knight is not expected to coach the Red Raiders for their home game Tuesday night against Baylor, Vitale reports. The Red Raiders visit Kansas in Lawrence on Saturday. Knight is expected to discuss his suspension in a news conference later Tuesday. One eyewitness told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal that Knight raised his voice to Smith after the chancellor approached him at a salad bar to compliment the coach on his recent good behavior. The witness told the paper that Knight flew into a rage and accused Smith of being a liar, saying that there had been nothing wrong with his demeanor this year. Smith turned to leave the area, the Avalanche-Journal reported, but Knight followed. The chancellor then told Knight that he deserved more respect than Knight was showing him, according to the Avalanche-Journal. The newspaper reports that no physical contact took place before Knight left the establishment after the confrontation, got in his car and pulled into traffic. According to the Avalanche-Journal, Knight stopped his car then and briefly got out before getting back in and driving away. Texas Tech is 4-2 in the Big 12 this season. The Red Raiders had been unbeaten in the league until last week, when they lost to Texas and Oklahoma State. Information from The Associated Press and the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal was used in this report.
so basically, knights an arrogant ass w/ a temper problem and a hair-trigger rage-aholic. what else is new. the school should just perscribe him xanax and get it over with. or maybe valium. problem solved.
It's not about whether Bobby Knight is an idiot. We all know he is. Bobby Knight is a given. If you push his buttons, he'll react inappropriately and over the top. The question I have is, why would the chancellor even run that risk? This ia a man who has gone off on somebody for saying something as dumb as "Hey, Knight". Don't tell me the university didn't know exactly who and what they were getting when they hired Bobby Knight. Now the school's doesn't have Coach Knight's services for at least 5 games, and maybe for good. All because the chancellor pushed Knight's buttons, and he reacted predictably. If your boss came up to you and said your behavior's been better lately, wouldn't you take that to mean that they disapproved of what you did in the not-too-distant past? It's really a censuring remark, disguised as a compliment.
the only thing predictable about bobby knight is unpredictability. anything can set this guy off...anywhere. the espn blow up just a month or so back showed that. this guy just blows up...whether out in public...on tv...in the gym...whereever. he can't control his own temper. honestly, i feel sorry for the guy...living with that kind of powderkeg anger can't be easy.
