Man, when I was a kid I used to watch Laser Disc versions of Ghostbusters and Back To The Future at my cousins house all of the time.
Compare Dark Knight (the tunnel/Joker transport in IMAX scene) on Blu Ray to its DVD counterpart if you can. And then tell me if it still isn't worth it*. *My assumptions: Your Panasonic is an adequate HD display, like the Panasonic TH-50PZ700U You have something other than an Insignia or Memorex blu ray player You get your movies by Netflix to save paying the $30 at Best Buy => Dark Knight blu ray > Dark Knight dvd
my buddy offered me a bluray player for 50 bucks yet it still wasnt worth taking it. movie rental prices along with declining video rental stores and 30 dollars for a movie, heck i wouldnt take a bluray player for free
It's just my two cents. Over the past two years I've finally got a semi-decent home entertainment set up. I just completed it with the LG bd390 blu-ray, that I got this weekend. I have a 52" Samsung lcd 1080P, the Onkyo 9100THX which is a dolby THX certified with pretty much all the true hd and sound capability you could ask for. It's 7.1 I love the blu-ray. I absolutely love it. Most blu-ray titles don't even offer the 7.1 but 3:10 to Yuma did so I got it. The picture, sound, everything is absolutely noticeable to me. It also does a decent job upconverting my standard dvd's. The machine is capable of doing the streaming netflix stuff, but I haven't tried it yet. There is also another service that allows you to rent movies and I haven't tried that either. If bluray dies out, then I'll have the ability to stream, but I'm really impressed by the blu-ray experience so far.
me either if im going to wasted money on something it isnt that. ive spent thousands of dollars on cd/dvds not going to do it again. just so all you people know in in about 5-10 years all your blu ray stuff will be sitting there collecting dust.
I think maybe it's my age or something where I just don't understand the benefit to cost ratio (for me). I have a friend who has a 61 inch Samsung LCD Projection http://reviews.cnet.com/projection-tvs/samsung-hl61a750/4505-6484_7-32915921.html who has shown me blu-ray vs. dvd on the television (although we did not watch Dark Knight) and I could see the difference when he went back and forth but it wasn't like I was blown away. I'll put it like this, had I walked into his house without knowing if he was watching a blu-ray disk or DVD I probably could not have guessed which format he was watching. I know there is increased audio with blu-ray also but the difference just isn't that big to me and it does not increase my "viewing pleasure" at all. It's just not worth the money although I have looked at the LG player that can stream netflix but only because it can stream netflix
what movie were you watching? there are a lot of films due to age, film quality etc that have a minimal quality upgrade from dvd to blu-ray...there are others that look like a whole different movie. If you saw anything in the last 10 years you should have seen the difference in quality if it was something like Goodfellas or something then you probably wouldnt have noticed a difference. If you have like ratatouille on dvd and blu-ray check out the differences between those two. the dvd looks great, but the blu-ray is near flawless
Lol, I meant "for". My heart goes out to that lady. My view of illegal downloading is it's "buzzed" driving. Everyone likely have done it at one point or another, but it shouldn't be something you should try and convince others to do or be proud to be doing. But as far as Blu Ray, it's that much better for some people, it's not for others. Some people can eat average everyday and be happy with it and not see the point of going out to $40 restaurants, others do. I personally love Blu-Ray and is renting a ton of it from Blockbuster.
I think it's just a matter of taste/age. I see the difference but like I said, if I walked into a room with a movie playing on a big, HD TV I wouldn't know if it was blu-ray or DVD unless someone told me. Then again, maybe it isn't age because all of my friends are late 20s to early 30s and they think it is worth the money. It just isn't for me. I think I probably spend as much time, research, money on dogs as many of you do on electronics. I guess different hobbies for different folks
You are right, it's in the eye of the beholder. Personally, I hate watching SD movies anymore. I don't buy many blu-rays, but I rent them at Blockbuster. If something is good enough visually and its entertaining enough to re-watch, then I'll go buy it. For me, watching BD movies justifies the 50" plasma that I bought. It would be waste to me to watch SD movies if the TV is capable of much more. But like you said, different strokes for different folks... I'm not sure where the $30-$35 pricetag comes from. Maybe they used to be that high, but I've never paid more than $25....and even that is rare.
I think I've learned my lesson with DVD when I spent $30+ in 1997 buying movies in 4x3 pan and scan and then double dipping later on. I ended up either eBaying the older versions or giving them away. Now I'll wait for it to be affordable to "backup" copies of BR movies. I don't think it's worth it to buy the movie anymore. How many times will you watch that movie? I still have shrink wrapped dvds collecting dust.
This is the same reason I watch movies on Blu Ray!! I bought a 50" plasma 2 years ago, if i'm going to watch just SD movies why did i bother getting this nice TV. I should of bought something cheap!!
I knew what you meant.. lol. I was going to say it reminded me of the movie The Stupids. Return to Sender! lol
just saw this http://www.wbshop.com/on/demandware.../Product-Show?pid=1000092794&adid=ClsscPreEml for 70 bucks, not a bad price all was good then i saw it was not the extended version my hopes and dreams shattered
