I just plan on getting PS3 and getting Blu-Ray from Netflix for at least a year. Let prices drop and the format war to shake out before making a move. Evan
I was wrong. There were reports from about this time last year that said this was the case (I could get links if you want), but those were apparently wrong. As mentioned, there will still be p*rn on Blu-ray (unless something has changed recently). I think Vivid and a few other studios are still planning on putting out p*rn on both formats...or just Blu-ray in some cases. And there's already some p*rn being sold in Japan apparently (not much of a HD DVD presence over there I believe). All that said, assuming this is true and the p*rn studios start pumping out movies soon exclusively for HD DVD (before the format war ends), this certainly won't help Blu-ray win the war.
To make a bad situation look more ridiculous. Sony actually prohibited p*rn companies from using blue-ray. Suicidal... http://www.sgknox.com/2007/01/11/no-p*rn-on-blu-ray/ No p*rn On Sony HD-DVD Blu-ray? Thursday, January 11th, 2007 | 8:15 pm Has Sony gone mad? Prominent adult movie producer Digital Playground (site) says it is forced to use HD DVD instead of Blu-ray, because Sony does not allow XXX-rated movies to be released on Blu-ray. It does not matter how you stand to p*rn. It is here and it is a massive business. It is also an industry that is an early adopter for new media technology. VHS might not have won with out the adult film industry adopting it. German Heise has interviewed Joone the founder of Digital Playgrounds at the AVN 2007 show in Las Vegas. Joone says actually said last year he is committed to Blu-ray. Now they announced four HD DVD titles in the United States. In the interview Joone says he was forced to use HD DVD, because no Blu-ray disc manufacturer would make his discs, because Sony was against it and they would loose their license. If this holds true, Blu-ray is at a major disadvantage and could fail.
The fact that there is already p*rn on Blu-ray, that Sony doesn't have the power by themselves to prohibit p*rn on Blu-ray, and that they allowed p*rn on UMD kind of makes those details seem a little inaccurate...or something.
Wow. If Sony's "anti-pr0n" stance is true, the company truly has some of the worst management around (especially those involved with strategy and business development). I'm talking "Isiah Thomas" bad, too. Just about every decision they've made over the last year or so has been the wrong one. It's like watching a train wreck in slow motion. This past summer, when both formats launched, there was no doubt in my mind that Blu-Ray would win. They had the PS3 (market penetration), the better technology, and the backing of more studios. And now? Well, let's just say that I may need to eat some crow in the future. The momentum has shifted, and it's actually possible for HD-DVD to win now. (My God, did I just write that statement?)
p*rn and HD are 2 things that I don't want mixed together. Too much reality as all the scars and stretchmarks come to you in HD, no thanks.
I don't know. Blu-ray has a lot of momentum after the PS3 launch and CES. What's holding them back is their pricing. All their standalone players are way too expensive for Joe 6 Pack. And they're not helping themselves in the software department either with featureless titles selling for a $39.98 list price. They're leaving the door wide open for HD-DVD by doing that. They announced a Chinese manufactured player at CES so it's quite conceivable that a standalone HD-DVD unit could be priced at or below 200 bucks in the not-too-distant future. Blu-ray's days would be numbered at that point.
FWIW: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070112-8602.html The article then basically repeats what was said in the OP (p*rn studios leaning towards HD DVD due to the bigger userbase, ready-to-use tools, it being cheaper to produce, etc.). So yeah...doesn't seem like there are any restrictions for p*rn being released on Blu-ray. Whether or not p*rn studios want to release their movies on Blu-ray is still a concern though.
LOL. It doesnt so much mean bluray is doomed as much as it means HD-DVD is now guaranteed to be around. I guarantee their will be plenty of bluray p*rn out there in time.
I don't see why the wouldn't do that. They ended up putting movies on VHS. Keep in mind that it would require quite a bit for Sony to actually do that though. They'll probably be very stubborn and stick with supporting just Blu-ray longer than any other movie studio (though Disney and Fox seem pretty stubborn too), but they'd come around eventually. They like money too.
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/home-ent...rst-blurayhd-dvd-dualformat-player-225924.php The day we've dreamed of has finally come. No, our parents aren't getting un-divorced, nor is Timmy coming back from that "dog farm" he got sent to—LG's just announced the world's first dual-format Blu-ray/HD DVD player to be unveiled at CES. Launch? Some time in early 2007. We cannot wait! LG Electronics (LG), a leader in consumer electronics and mobile communicati ons, announced that it will launch the world's first dual-format high-definition disc player, capable of playing both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD content. The unit will be released in the United States in early 2007. Details will be provided at the 2007 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), held January 8-11 in Las Vegas. LG expects this technological breakthrough to end the confusion and inconvenience of competing high-definition disc formats for both content producers and consumers.
