First the cigarettes, then the trans-fat, now this? http://wcbstv.com/politics/bloomberg.war.on.2.920343.html
I can agree with banning transfats or high fructose corn syrup because of the difficulty of metabolizing it in our bodies (and its nasty consequences), but salt is taking it a little too far.
I don't like the idea of mandates against things like this but I think education about the amount of salt, fat and sugar we consume is important. The most I would support laws is to improve labelling than that. Then if people want to pork out and send their blood pressure skyrocketing go for it. All I know is the next time I'm in NYC I still better be able to get 10,000 year old eggs in Chinatown.
The thing that's stupid is that salt isn't necessarily bad for you. It is a myth that it gives you hypertension. It doesn't It is bad for you if you already have hypertension.
hypertension or blood pressure? I don't see how it can mess with your heart rate. I think the main problem is not salt as we think of it but the sodium that doesn't even taste salty. They put that crap in all the prepackaged foods so it does not go bad. I have no idea how they will keep it from spoiling without the salt.
anyone remember that douchebag that made McDonalds to stop the super size option? I saw him on Conan saying we don't need 40oz of drink. WTF is he to tell me what I need. If I have the cash I will buy a 5 gallon bucket of Dr. Pepper syrup. Obviously people want the salt or are willing to eat it because it is clearly marked in a universal way ever since the .gov started the whole "Facts" thing which I think was awesome.
I think the article made a semi-good point. Plus, I really don't think reducing teh salt would make that much of a difference except in chips. For instance, it cited that chicken noodle soup has 1140 mg of salt, but who can ever taste it? I mean it just tastes of chicken, nothing else, I can never taste the salt, and the same goes for the meatballs. If only there is a substitute.....
We live in an age where what tastes good takes 20 years off your life. How many of you buy those Campbell's or Progresso soups, cook the whole can in a bowl and eat it without thinking much of it? Well, that one bowl of soup is probably about 80-90% of your daily sodium intake.
Who wants to live to be 100 anyway? Me. (I do get reduced sodium when available, but those are still very high sodium.) Then drink more water.
Why buy a 20 ounce bottle of water for 1.39 when you can get a 44 ounce coke added to your value meal for an extra buck?
It is about the invasion of Liberities and choices So how far will our government with go to 'protect' you [Kind of like the story of iRobot] Rocket River
This, unfortunately, is the future we are looking at when half the country is on path for obesity and the other for a heart attack (slight exaggeration). People just aren't willing to make a sacrifice to their lifestyles, unless its by mandate.
People also aren't knowledgeable enough to understand what's good for them, and advertising/marketing for these conglomerates take advantage of that. For example, the FDA does not do a good job of policing the usage of terms like "Organic," "Natural," "No Sugar Added," and "Fat Free," and does not fully disclose the health dangers of manufactured substitutes like saccharin or sucralose. "The Omnivore's Dilemma" by Michael Pollan is a good read.
