SHOCKED! I really am. This is a TOTAL salary dump for the Suns. They are starting over. I guess they feel that only TWO max contracts will work on their team and they already have Marion and you know Amare will be the second. You can count out the Suns this year for sure now. As for the Knicks. Great move. They FINALLY get the PG they are looking for and a general All Star talent in Marbury. Marbury and Houston is a pretty solid backcourt. And Frank Williams has been playing well, wonder if they try to move him now that they have Hardaway and Moochie at the PG spot. Knicks fans right now are probably wondering why they could not get Thomas as the GM sooner! Interesting to note that the Rockets PLAY the Knicks this Thursday on TNT. Too bad this trade could not have happened later so we would not have to face the Knicks with Marbury. Once again, the VALUE of an expiring contract via Dice and Ward. It is amazing what it can net you!
that is a crazy friggin trade. regarding marbury being a cancer, i think it's an unfair label. the guy seems to have matured since his days as a t-wolve and i haven't heard complaints since he's been a sun. i guess this a deal for cap room reasons for the suns, but i'm not sure if guys will be jumping through hoops to play for them when they get rid of their best player in a lopsided deal. i assume they think they'll have room to sign a free agent at the year's end. this would be similiar to the Rox trading Francis or Yao. I'd be pissed if I were a Suns fan and elated if I were a Knicks fan. I'm at the game on Thurs when the Rox play the Knicks, I wonder if Steph will be in uniform?
I guess Phoenix is giving up this season to prepare for the future. They'll have a potentially good Yugo pg, 2 first round picks (plus there own lottery pick if they still have it), and a lot of cap room. With some good picks, they'll be in great shape.
Well, let's see: Phoenix McDyess - Free agent after the year. Suns don't have to resign him (and most likely will not due to a guy named Amare being there). $13.5 million salary this year. Ward - Free agent after the year. Has a $2 million buyout. But... the Suns suddenly need a point guard, so Ward is *okay* for now, but obviously not a long-term solution. $6 million salary this year. Eisley - Under contract for 3 more seasons. Albatross contract, too. Suns lost here. Eisley is making $5.843 mill this year, $6.375 next year, and $6.9 the last year. That's a hard pill to swallow. 2 first rounders - Crux of the deal, IMO. The Knicks might net the Suns a decent pick this year. Some foreign player - The next Tony Parker? The next Serge Zwikker? Cash - Always good to have, right? New York Marbury - Star player. Will thrive in NY and make the team better. Max contract. Hardaway - Past his prime. Always hurt. Albatross contract. Makes $13.5 million this year and has a PLAYER option for $14.625 next season. I see him taking the option for sure. Poor (... but rich) Knicks. ---------- So, essentially, the Suns are rebuilding and traded Penny's terrible contract for Eisley's lesser one (but with more years on it). They also got 2 first round picks (one being conditional), cash, and some foreign player. As much as I hate to say it, the Suns didn't do so badly here. They got some cap flexibility and some picks. Good news for Rockets fans: We don't have to worry about them anymore.
....which then nets you a 6.9 million Trade Exception. That deal can't be judged yet. Let's see what that 7 million can net us this offseason in trades.
I don't think its that silly for the Knicks, Marbury, Houston, and Thomas should be a good nucleus to at least compete in the East.
They're not title contenders until they can win a 1st round playoff series. With KG and Marbury, they would have had a much better shot to win in the first round previously...
true. point taken. i was just saying that they look like contenders so far this year. i guess we'll find out.
Seems like a good trade for both teams Isiah wanted to make a big splash and he's made the biggest one of the year. He gets a superstar point guard (in terms of ability but maybe not in character) and a quality veteran off the bench for a player who has you constantly holding your breath (cuz his legs might fall off) and two blah point guards. He knows its not that hard to get in the playoffs in the East and with the very weak Atlantic division, this team just might fighting for the division crown. In terms of Phoenix, this is like a baseball team packing it in at mid-season. They've got the worst record in the West, they fired their coach, their current crop of players are playing like the Broncos of the last two weeks, and even if they did right the ship, they'd still be a lower seed in the West. So, give them credit for taking the risk. I would really like to know why they got rid of Marbury when it seemed like he was their franchise player. Anyways, they know players love the Phoenix area and now that they have the cash, they should make the biggest splash in the FA market this summer. Kobe as a Sun??
