He gets the same information Feigen does. Except what Feigen can't put his name to because of his relationship with the Rockets as a beat writer/pseudo Rockets spokesperson. Fran has that freedom, he gets to play devil's advocate. I think he's mostly disliked for his humor it goes over the head of some and is misunderstood.

Fran Blinebury: Why does he cover the Rockets?

Why does he cover the Rockets?

    http://blogs.chron.com/franblinebury/2008/01/i_love_a_parade.html

What is Fran's problem? It seems like either he really dislikes this Rockets team, or he hates blogging. I'm not sure which, but his over-the-top sarcasm and bitter tone are really unprofessional.

I agree that the Rockets have looked bad at times this year, but to be such a sourpuss after the Rockets beat the defending champions is strange.

His observations aren't even remotely insightful. He strikes me as bitter and washed up. I'm sure there are major newspapers with worse sports coverage than the chronicle, but it's probably a very short list.

Blinebury comes off most of the time as a bitter, blathering idiot.

I always thought it was curious how silent he was during all that recent T-Mac trade frenzy. If you paid close attention, it looked like he was one of the primary sources of the rumor -- he speculated in his blog about T-Mac getting traded, which led other people in the media to believe that if a "media source close to the Rockets" was saying so, then it must be true (this isn't just speculation, I remember reading a reference to his blog specifically on ESPN, I believe from TrueHoop which was going nuts about the possibility of trading T-Mac). This happened before Sam Smith's article in the Chicago Tribune. Since that time (until now), Blinebury hasn't been heard from. I kept wondering if the management at the Chronicle had put the kibosh on him or suspended him temporarily for his irresponsible blogging.

Whatever it was, unfortunately for the rest of us he's back.

He was covering the college bowl games so somebody else had the Rockets shift for a while. Frankly I don't mind the guy's writing. Yeah, he's sarcastic, but the Rockets to a large extent have deserved it this season.

And he's got a point with this latest post. The Rockets are talented underachievers. They score big wins and terrible losses (Philadelphia, twice). People get overly optimistic after a big win but the real question is whether or not the Rockets can play with any consistency.

I'm not categorizing the SA game as a big win, btw. SA's slumping, and the horrible shooting in that game makes me feel uneasy.

A sports column/blog should be insightful and/or entertaining. He routinely fails on both counts.

"Entertaining" is in the eye of the beholder, and personally I enjoy reading his column.

Anyway it could be worse. If Rockets fans think Blinebury is hard on the Rockets they should try reading some of the guys who cover the NY teams.

    Fran is...

    - a terrible writer (his metaphors are the worst)
    - bitter
    - not entertaining
    - a smartass
    - a Rockets hater

    Fran needs...

    - a proofreader
    - to get laid
    - a sense of humor

    Fran does...

    - obviously read this board. So many of his comments give it away.

LOL I was going to say, isn't he just saying the same thing the majority of the posters here are saying but with panache?

His job is to get people to read either the Chron or the website and get you to talk about it with other people. Guess what.. you just did exactly what he wanted to accomplish. ;)

I get a kick out of reading his blog (even when he disses Chuck) if only for the responses... people get so riled up it makes me laugh.

Never been a fan of his Negative approach to everything. Even in the championship years, I remember him always being a real glass is half empty type. I remember after the 2nd championship, there was the victory celebration deal in the Astrodome and everyone booed the hell out of him while he was talking. Ah....good times.

LoL... This is a historical problem after all. Do you think he got resentment inside of him against the Rockets or he is just pissing off every one else?

Anyway, what matters is the Rockets is on the track of winning games. Victory is the best weapon to keep those bitter lousy morons shut up.

What is he able to do if he got demoted again? I mean where he could set his blog outside of Chron?

I don't mind Fran. Like me, he is prone to hyperbole on occasion, but that's part of his schtick.

    That's pretty weak.

This EXACTLY what alot of posters on this board and callers to sports talk radio sound like with their petty and immature T-Mac comments.

Fran doesn't bother me most of the time. He balances a lot of the "6 year dynasty" crap I hear every time this team wins 3 games in a row or when Tmac makes one of his empty promises to the media.

I never understood why he didn't like JVG more seeing how both guys seem to have serious problems admitting anything positive about the team.
