  4. Player 4

  5. Player 5

Here is a little game of data-driven decision-making. Nobody has to do it, just participate if you think it's an interesting exercise.

To try and remove any personal preferences or bias, I "anonymized" the players. (If of interest, I will be happy to reveal who is who in a few days or a week or so, but it shouldn't be the focus of this.)

Here are the per 36 Minutes (to make the production comparable) and Advanced stats of 10 players - 5 big men and 5 guards, either at the same age of 20, or, if they came to the league later, in their first year in the NBA.

Pick up to three players out of the 10 players listed you would NOT build around as franchise players.

No names at this point - purely looking at projecting their future output based on their stats at roughly the same age/stage in their career. The stats of which players would make you pessimistic about building a team around them? (Feel free to comment on why you chose these players - I guess different stats are more or less important to different people.)

He's not one of the players listed...some really good players there, though.

Find me players with 30 ppg per 36 min and we'll talk...all I see are likely okay prospects with flaws but nothing that wows me.

The three players with the worst Win Shares should be talked about to be benched.

Players 4, 5 and 9 look like foul machines. Very similar number of fouls per 36 minutes.

I think it was @SamFisher who explained to us that such players should not get minutes because they would foul out all the time?

The bigs in this one are better players than the small dudes.

Well, context matters. You can't really compare guys without knowing what volume of shots they're putting up, from where, and what role they have on the team. Are these all rookie years? Second year? What has the progression been like if they've played multiple years. Also, the minutes matter because generally, production doesn't scale linearly like in the per 36 min stats.

But, if I had to just look at this...

For bigs, I would basically disregard shooting percentages, without context there's no way of knowing if someone is getting Tyson chandler alley oops or KG triple teamed turnaround mid range shots.

I would focus on TRB%, BLK%, and DWS primarily and then overall WS/VORP. I would build around player 4 then player 2. I'm not sure about the others.

    For guards, I would primarily look at TS%, STL%, WS/VORP, and AST%.

Player 7 looks to be the best of the bunch. Then I would go with player 9 and 6. Player 10 looks like more of a PG with the much higher AST% but it doesn't mean as much if you can't shoot.

I would probably put player 4 above all of them though. It looks like he contributes the most to winning at this age.

Then let them find out themselves. What's the point of your post, other than to spoil this thread?

I would ask you to delete that, please. @daywalker02

It has nothing to do with spoilering bruh.

It's very easy to guess based on your preferences.

    It's a honey trap.

    Take it as a feedback.

    I picked player 3. I wouldn't want to build around him/her.

Okay, asking the other way around - do you see any player among these 10 whom you would definitely build around?

I'm surprised nobody is ruling out player 9 - his FG% is the worst of all players, he fouls the most (together with players 4 and 5) and his point output is the lowest per 36 minutes of all guards, at that point in his career (when he was 20).

What made you pick him over the other guards?
