how would a 50 million dollar contract effect them financially when it is time to resign roy and aldridge?
Luxury tax, which Paul Allen can easily afford if he wants to. Signing Turkey-Glue to 5yrs/$50MM would prove his thoughts on the matter. I bet the Blazers remember Turkey-Glue banking in that 3-pointer at the buzzer in Portland.
If they get a healthy HEDO from the recent CHampionship game we just saw. Portland will easily take on the L.A Fakers...
I still like the idea of the Blazers pursuing an Andre Miller type much better than Turkeyglue. Kills two birds with one stone for the Blazers: 1) Adds the veteran presence they need, 2) Upgrades their weakest position. On a side note: maybe we can snag the rights to this Joel Freeland guy i've been hearing about for years?
They still have the assets to add a solid veteran PG. They probably do both before the season starts. They are the most flexible team I have seen since that old Blazers team that had no superstar but was 2 starter quality players deep at every position.
I think it would be a mistake to sign Andre Miller, even when they can afford both he and Turkoglu. That team is, and will be, at its best with the ball in Brandon Roy's hands. Andre Miller becomes pretty useless in crunch time, esp. with his poor shooting. Turkoglu on the other hand, IMHO, takes that team to a whole different level, creating or spotting up when Roy has the ball. If I'm the Blazers, I foresee a big lineup with Roy, Fernandez, and Turkoglu closing out games, the latter two creating excellent spacing, with Blake or whoever starting. I don't see where Andre Miller fits into that.
Turkeyglue makes more sense then Miller for the Blazers. Roy is basically their ballhandler in crunch time anyways.
Steve Blake is and was the weakest link on that Blazer squad. They need to upgrade the PG position in the worst way. Andre Miller would do wonders for them. Furthermore, Roy needs to be free to shoot first and pass/create second in crunch time. There's way too much pressure on Roy as it is right now to handle both the scoring load and PG duties. Also, going after Turkoglu has really upset RUDY FERNANDEZ. They can ill afford to lose Rudy. Forget Hedo and go after Dre.
In the words of that sage they call Rich Lord: We'll agree to disagree. I pretty much echo what cabbage said. Teams will pack it into Roy and LMA, daring the other players to beat them. Hedo can make them pay, Miller not as much IMO.
How does one go about acquiring players whose rights are renounced? Buyouts? I'm assuming they will still get paid as per their respective 1st round contracts as well.
this offer probably ensures that turkoglu will leave the magic, as the offer that otis smith put on the table was lower. now that vince carter trade is looking unwise in my eyes, because they essentially traded turkoglu, lee, alston and battie to obtain carter. (my reasoning is that if they had kept lee, alston, and battie, they could have signed turkoglu to an acceptable contract extension, because those 3 only make ~$12 mil combined as compared to carter, ~$16 mil).
Orlando essentially made the decision to pay Vince $52 million over the next 3 years and let Hedo walk for $50 million over 5 years... time will tell how it pans out. Unnecessary move if it fails, shrewd move if Vince helps them keep composure down the stretch and becomes Mr. 4th Quarter.
With his rights the Rockets pay him the rookie scale.. If Blazers renounce him the Rockets can sign him as a free agent but they'll need to use their MLE money to do so.
