Yes, he tried to contest the block once he go to griffin, but he didn't run to him to contest a dunk. He ran to defend, and once he got there, realized griffin was going up right away. Just look at his feet and upper body movement. He was bracing for contact on the ground, as if he thought Blake would take a dribble and try to bump him off.
How is this different than the dunk over the tall white guy last year? Nowhere near the best dunk ever. Maybe not even the best of his career. It isn't like Perkins is a great shot blocker.
I don't see any of what you're seeing.. All I saw was Perkins running straight at Blake and going up to contest the dunk/shot. That was good defense by Perkins, and nothing but respect given to him since 99% of the NBA would have ran away.
Maybe he wanted to get a head start at a possible rebound opportunity? A hard worker, that Perkins. Always early to work and leaves embarrassed.
Ummm.. a dunk a dunk is moving the ball through the hoop in a downward direction... it has nothing to do if he touches the rim or not.
What experienced shot blocker runs almost out of the semi-circle to block a dunk attempt? Their instinct is to meet a dunker closer to the rim. Perkins got caught thinking of getting a charge, which is why he went out that far in the first place. Not to take anything away from Griffin, since that shows how well he jumps.
Well first of all props to Perkins for going hard and not being a p***y. Let me just say that might be one of the best dunks of all time, esp when you consider most highlight reel dunks happen on tall white stiffs (aka Tmac on Bradley). Perkins is one of the better post defenders in the league, and for Griffin to dunk on him at this level is just amazing.
This is clearly not a dunk because he is not touching the rim. They should change these to Lay-up-aroos.
Durant: "Man, I don't care about that dunk." haha http://newsok.com/bigger-than-blake-griffins-dunk/article/3644975
Exactly. That was a dunk, and without a doubt better than Lebron's, and without a doubt the best of his career. If you don't agree with me, you're stupid.
Yea because jumping so high you can throw the ball down over a guy through the rim just isn't that impressive
Let me break it down, again. Perkins sees griffin and runs, trying to get in position for a possible charge or contest a dribble move, so he must get outside the semicircle to be on the safe side. At some point before contact, he realizes Blake is taking off from there, and not dribbling at all, which is why he end ups just short of being outside the semi-circle. Look at his knees and hands right as blake takes off, knees are bent and hands are forward, similar to a blocking position in football. He's bracing for ground contact, not taking off for a block. And then he makes the adjustment to foul him and/or try a poor block attempt. My point was he didn't challenge blake with the sole intention of blocking him, as someone else said. We've all seen plenty of similar plays when a center comes over to block a dunk, from a similar angle/distance, but they meet the player at the rim. In those cases, it's clear the sole intention was a block. You don't go as far out as Perkins did with that boy language, if you always intended on going for a block. Especially as an experienced and competent shot blocker.
Perkins tried to foul him hard. He pushed Griffin in the air but he still got dunked on. That's the dunk of the year. If you don't agree then you must hate epic career ending posterizations.
