Oh yeah...forgot about that. It was maybe about 10-15 minutes of him making jokes about his cameramen and stuff. Then they showed some episode from May, or something. I stopped watching then, though.
It is interesting in watching CNN, FOXNEWS, etc. as the different facets of the power outage continue to be made known. Got to give props to... 1. the Texas Interconnect grid, 2. the manner in which all those affected (epecially the NYCers) are working together to get through this crisis.
good morning fellow BBSers! I would like to announce that my power just came on five minutes ago, and I am coming here to tell you guys how weird, scary, and cool it was last night. first of all, my prediction that Kam would be negative was correct. what's your problem Kam? you have never been to New York, yet you have so much bitterness. very mature and responsible of you Kam second of all, there were 600 trains that were stuck underneath rivers or tunnels. there were people stuck in elevators and skyscrapers. this could have been a disaster. thousands of stranded commuters couldn't get back to Long Island, New Jersey or Connecticut. they were literally stuck in Manhattan with the option of sleeping on the street or walking over the Brooklyn Bridge. subways are out of commission, the NY Times are printing out of another factory. we were on the George Washington Bridge with kids when my friend saw a plume of smoke. we thought it was odd, and then once we hit traffic there were no traffic lights anywhere in the city. we could tell something was going on because everyone was out packing the streets. the plum of smoke turnedout to be the Con Ed plant on 14th street shutting down their system to avoid system overload. cel phones are out, but land lines are working, and I got access to the BBS, so I'm okay if anyone wants to know. i will check in later with more news.
The building with the lights in the foreground is where I spent the night. The backup generators are still on here. Any help or ideas on how I can get back to Boston would be appreciated.
The conspiracy Theorist in me says something wicked this way comes SOMETHING HAPPEN .. and we may never know what it was On the Real . . . How much has to go WRONG for this to happen? Where is the Redundancy? Is this a comedy of Errors? WHO FUMBLED THE BALL!!! Rocket River
Glad to hear you NYCers are OK. When I rolled in from the bar at around 1:30AM, I watched news coverage of everyone sleeping on the sidewalks in NYC and how everyone was watching out for each other and checking on friends. I still haven't heard from my sister and brother though (she's in NJ and he is in MD).
Yeah I am in Manhattan too, but no power yet for us Upper East Siders yet. Fortunately, the college I work in has some backup generators so all was not lost (although we spent some time trying to save precious samples). Hey but my internet connection still works. The night was pretty surreal. No lights anywhere. You could actually see stars from NYC, which was a first for me. Many people just made the best of the situation. We did some bbqing since basically everything else was out of the question. So I guess I was fortunate to live so close to work. My other colleagues did get stuck in the city. Traffic was a nightmare since it happened during rush hour. Volunteers were trying to direct traffic, but it was quite a hopeless task. Luckily, no one got seriously injured just walking or driving in my neighborhood. It was umm "controlled" chaos at its best. No heavy looting or anything like that in my neighborhood. People were pretty upset about the whole situation, but I think the city handled itself well from my perspective. I know as someone who grew up in Texas that some of you might look down upon East Coasters and such, but I do have to say that people did a remarkable job of staying calm and making the best of the situation.
Not everyone here thinks like Kam....sometimes his balls get too big for his Rocket britches....He must have had a bad day or something...I am glad everyone over there stayed calm and enjoyed the stars....oh I love NYC, I just dont like the Knicks...Go Rockets!!
Here is a blackout story for ya.... Just got off the phone with my Mom. Apparently, at 3:30 PM yesterday, my 76 year old Uncle, who lives on the 26th floor of a high rise in Park Slope, Brooklyn, decided to go food shopping. As he is pushing his cart down the canned vegetables aisle, the blackout hits. He manages to walk the two blocks back to his building, but the elevators are down and the front doors don't open. He wound up camping for the evening in the courtyard in front of his building with about a dozen other senior citizens who live there. Younger people from other buildings in the neighborhood brought them food and a bottle of wine. At daybreak, the power came back but the elevators were still down. So my Uncle, and a handful of other seniors, walked up 26 flights of stairs to get to their units. They took a break every 4th flight or so. Amazing!
According to RocketBurrito, those seniors should have been sitting on the lawn with their 12 guages cocked and ready. "We gonna shoot us some of them looters tonight boys"
I haven't heard of much looting this time around, unlike in 1977. Were there any major looting incidents in NYC last night? Every policeman on the force was on emergency duty.
