Just wanted repost this from someone else's message and reiterate the fact that the costume in question was not an accurate portrayal of a real famous person (as numerous posts have claimed). Much like blackface, this girl has defaulted to a stereotypical image she thinks will evoke "black person" in the minds of everyone who sees the costume. Therefore, it can hardly be claimed that this was an innocent attempt to portray a specific person.
Exactly what in the history of humanity would lead you to beleive we can grow beyond our seemingly intense hatred of differences? Rocket River
Getting uppity so . . .if a klansman burns a cross in my yard and I get offended. .. am I Uppity then? The problem is most white folx won't acknowledge the more covert and subtle racism in our society This falls under that category This is another in a long string of 'isolated' events This happens almost annually. It gets reported. Black folx tell them they offensive. . and they do the same sh*t next year the loose translation: We don't give a d*mn how you black folx feel we don't give a d*mn about you . . . we gonna have our fun at your expense Rocket River
that is not subtle racism. that is overt and clear racism. who cares about subtle racism. i am around a ton of hispanics everyday who look at me and my girl crazy because they see a white guy with a mexican girl. big deal...get over it. if you want to worry about all the little crap people see then you are just perpetuating things. just act normal and nice to people and there won't be problems. simple as that. and if there are problems then tell them to **** off. thats it. and thats my feeling whether that feeling is wrong or not in your eyes. you know i get offended when i see racist activity in non-white communities that is allowed to slide but what can i do about it? nothing because i am white. so like i said get over it and move on.
Is it possible that the Women's Softball Team dressed up as the Men's Basketball Team, making the picture in question a more accurate representation than previously thought? Gordon and Thomas are pretty dark, and it is probably not easy to get make-up/paint of everyone's exact skin tone. On an unrelated note, one of their players is named Collins Emeka Okafor, that is quite a coincidence (though they could be related, since EO's parents were from Nigeria, just like CEO).
Fair enough... Both can't be Sims. Old wounds are hard to heal I guess. I don't think it's long enough when people's parents and grandparents lived in that era. Was he your best friend too? Had to ask...you set it up.
Well, you can take it one step further. Minorities actions get noticed because they are different - their skin color stands out. Particularly when it's negative in some way and used to reinforce a sterotype. As for white people, a negative act doesn't get attributed to whites, where as a positive one does to some degree. Minorities are under greater scrutiny. Sadly, there's nothing that can be done about it. It's just the way of the world. This is why Louis Farakhan said "Be excellent" - because this is how a minority can shed negative stereotypes for more positive ones.
Because other blacks feel that they have to act "white" in order to get where they are. This is the problem....Powell and Rice aren't acting "white" - they are acting like norm - fitting in - assimilating. You know, their presentation has to adjust to make others feel more comfortable - because that's what people will follow and trust. But it's not just black people - everyone does this in business to be successful. You dress a certain way, speak a certain way, and carry yourself a certain way that has nothing to do with your race. Powell and Rice haven't sold out - this is a case of black people being intolerant and is a projection of their own fears - that they have to sacrafice their "culture" in order to succeed in a white world. That's a fallacy, because the truth is only that they have to do what everyone in the world does - become leaders by being able to connect to those around them in a diversified world.
I seriously doubt she put that much thought into it. She probably just bought some black costume makeup at the Halloween store and didn't think twice about. I think it was innocent. Maybe she should of said she was Carl Herrera.
Not knowing more about the situation I wouldn't say that its de facto racism but I will say its ignorant and stupid. This may be all very innocent but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be pointed out.
These are excellent points and really show the complexity of the race issue. Thrugood Marshall was taught that he had to be meticulous in every aspect of his legal profession down to his appearence and bearing because otherwise white judges and juries wouldn't take him seriously. Jackie Robinson had to do the same thing and be exemplary in everything he did for the Dodgers. Unfortunately though many minorities feel that its an affront to who they are having to become models of majority behavior or else they won't succeed. Sorry to take this on a tangent but this is why Asians as the model minority is also a damaging stereotype. For one it divides Asians from other minorities but it also denies the fullness and diversity of the Asian-American experience.
I think you should fight it man. You and Jerry Falwell should march through El Paso and confront this outrage. Don't let being white hold you back!
This happened to me 2 weeks ago on the way to Waco (driving around 12 at night). I was fortunate that the cop chose not to give me a ticket because I was nice.
i know you are making fun of me for my point and lumping me in with some douche bag, but i am just pointing out how racism is basically given a free pass if you are not white and racism commited by whites (against blacks especially) is treated as if someone was murdering jesus christ all over again. so like i said...all i can do is get over it because it doesn't effect my life if someone wants to be ignorant and if people are complicit in allowing the ignorance to continue.
