Next year for Halloween I'm going to be Mr.T. After that I will be Prince. Then I will be Bob Marley. The next year after that I'm going to be George Clinton. I really like all these people a lot. If you are offened by that I DO NOT CARE.
It's not blackface, it's a costume in 2005. There is a big difference, you just don't want to see it. You are the one who needs to learn about it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackface If you a telling me that I can never dress like a famous black person that I admire, including makeup, then you are the one being racist.
What celebrity did these kids dress up as. It seems pretty obvious that this was done as a joke with black people as the subject. Maybe you should read the article again. The subject isn't Mr Meowgi, its some students at Stetson University.
Is the issue here a white person dressing up as a black person or a white person wearing "blackface"?
It was a local celebrity: "Members of the Stetson team dressed up as school basketball star Grlenntys Kicking Stallion Sims on Halloween by painting themselves black, wearing cornrows and fake gold teeth." Now if that isn't what he looks like adn they were trying to mock black people then it was plain wrong. But if the girls were just dressing up like he looks for fun then it shouldn't be a problem. I really don't think they were being malicious or racist. They probably went back to their dorms with their 50 Cent posters on the wall. Do you agree it would be nice if a we all could dress up as people as other races for fun without it being a problem? I want to be Dr.Funkenstien next year really really bad.
"I can see why people would consider it offensive," Sims said. "They said they wanted to dress up as us but they didn't say they were going to paint their bodies or anything. We are real close with the softball team and we didn't think anything of it. We gave them our jerseys." Sociologist Leonard Nance said the students did not realize their costumes would spark controversy. Sounds to me like the students just wanted to dress up as the star player of their school's basketball team. The article is the one that brings up the "blackface" term. In fact it uses it every other sentence it seems. Maybe its the media's fault for sensationalizing the issue.
Completely agree with you here pgabriel. I get sick of people from another background that tell others they should not be offended. It makes me most angry when people try to defend the use of Native American nicknames for sports and they tell actual Native Americans "Hey, we are honoring you not offending you, you should be proud." Ignorant asses.
You're calling others ignorant for calling on others to stand up and stop being so freakin sensitive? I can understand if what they did was overtly racist but I don't think it was. I'm sorry that your intellectual superiority has not filtered down to the rest of us but if you can make "White Chicks" and make never ending jokes about white people and white culture without reprocussion I see no problem with this. You look at any commercial produced today and the white male is the idiot. Every time. Why? Because if the company dared to make the female or the minority the idiot it's immediately racist or sexist. Why is there only an outrage when it's against someone other than the white male? I simply don't understand this. If white guys can take it why can't everyone else?
It's about power and history. It's about a history that is clearly defined which 40 years of civil rights cannot erase. Do you believe that inherently, a human being of any race or gender is equally intelligent? If you do, have you wondered why 99% of CEO's are middle aged white men? How do you explain this and what does it say about our society?
I do not believe that all humans are equally intelligent. However, I feel that almost all humans have the CAPACITY for equal intelligence. Some people also have an intellectual ability that puts them head and shoulders above the rest. I do not feel that this is the case with all (or even most) CEO's but have you taken a look into how many non-white's major in business or related fields (and I highly doubt your 99% is realistic)? It may be a matter of non-white's choosing other fields that may interest them more. You also may notice an increase in the number of non-white CEO's in the future. The difference in humans is what choices they make. I'm not saying that choices are defined by ethnicity. What I'm saying is that to point out a current statistic as an indicator of any kind of institutional racism is beyond the point. On another note, as someone who is half hispanic and half white I can guarantee you that none of my ancestors were given anything. A research of my family will prove that endless hard work has resulted in my current status. When is it time to let go of the failures of the past and move towards the future? One can only achieve greatness if one takes responsibility for one's actions. If you always have someone else to blame, you'll never be great and you'll never achieve anything worthwhile. My dad's white but grew up in downtown Detroit and lived a life of relative poverty for much of his life. He decided he wanted to go to college and work towards his future. He received no grants, scholarships and paid his own way. Today he's successful and did it by not relying on anyone but himself. If you can only look at things through a black vs. white lens I feel sorry for you. The choices we make determine who we are not the color of our skin. Once we learn that things will get better.
Your father was poor but he was not judged based on his skin color. Being poor is 1 strike against you. Imagine if you're poor and you can't drink from the same water fountain or denied jobs because of your race. And you think this is ancient history? Does 1965 sound like ancient history to you? There are millions of people whose parents were beaten or denied equal opportunity because of their skin color. That's 1 generation. 1 freaking generation for people older than 30. Excuse me if 1 generation does not equate to "freedom and opportunity is available to anyone" and when will this claim of racism end. One of the biggest reasons most CEO's are middle age white males is because when they were deciding which college to attend, their minority counterparts were fighting just to get in. If you believe 1 generation has leveled the playing field, you should be the one who is pitied.
They were born with superior athletic talent. Are you saying white men are inherently more intelligent?
