Possibly not D&D material...but related to Middle East, Privacy, and Censorship -- so what the heck.

The issue seems to be about encryption and RIM controlling networks .

Can some techie help me understand.

Does this mean blackberry emails and systems are more secure then others?

Is RIM proposing to share encryption and thus making it possible for foreign countries to monitor our emails.

Is this already happening with iphone and other smart phone messages and if not why aren't they under review too?

Is it just about web access? (and is iphone web access different then blackberry other then the nifty screen).

I just don't get it....can someone sum it up? There must be a way to explain it to a luddite like me. (and you techie guys who simply browse this forum feel free to post -- there's no need to pledge your political allegiance in this thread).

    Not yet anyways.

The reason for Blackberry's success in the corporate world is that they encrypt everything going between the Blackberry and the Blackberry Enterprise Server. You cannot sniff or inspect the network traffic and see whats traveling on the network from blackberries. You can do this on almost every other device available. This allows the service provider to see what you are doing on the internet. Messages traveling on blackberries are secure which causes huge problems for law enforcement.

I don't think the gov't will follow-through. What business will willingly use a smart phone in those countries now knowing everything is being sniffed out by the gov't.

can emails from other smart phones like the iphone be sniffed and inspected? I always assumed they were equally secure....why, then, aren't those phones being targeted?

(i guess there's not much interest on this from the D&D geeks. If I'd posted it in the hangout I could have at least had an apple/non-apple slugfest :) .

Most internet email can be sniffed. This is not a smartphone issue. This is an internet issue. Corporate emails systems are often encrypted and blackberry has this feature which is why they are so popular to business users. Blackberries dominate the US market because of their BES server, not their hardware.

You don't think your emails are getting sniffed/examined in the US. You guys are really naive.

It's being sniffed out in the US.

Why would it be any different in the UAE?

RIM caved into Saudi yesterday, I'm sure they will follow suit with the UAE.

It's funny how willing RIM becomes to loosen its principles when India (1 billion ppl), Saudi (25m people), Kuwait (2m ppl) and Lebanon (4m ppl) join the UAE (5m ppl) in telling them to f off. Money talks.

It's also funny how this is such a big deal given that the UAE is asking for something that other countries already have.
