I know people that work at Sam's. People get diapers and then stuff DVD's and crap in the packaging and try to just buy the diapers and walk out. People always try to get away with stuff. Not black people. Not white people. PEOPLE. People steal sh*t and stores rightfully try to prevent it.

Unless these women can prove that Toys 'R' Us never checks receipts of white customers, they have no case.

If Toys 'R Us has a policy to check all receipts then the ones liable isn't Toys'R Us but the employees. Unless this plaintiffs can prove that Toys 'R Us corporate knowlingly had employees violating their own policy or that they failed to properly oversee these people I don't see how Toys 'R Us as a whole can be sued.

How liable is a company for the actions of a few employees in violation of company policy?

About ten years ago I was buying some groceries at a supermarket in a largely poor and black part of town. I paid for them with a check and the policy of this supermarket was to ask for ID for checks. I asked the cashier, who was black, if he wanted to see my ID and he said, "No, you look like you're honest." I'm wondering though if it was because he hadn't seen a lot of Asians shopping there and he presumed that Asians were more honest than other races.

While this might seem like a good thing that racial stereotyping works in this case for me I am still bothered that it is a stereotype.

I don't think you can assume either way. If one always assumes there is no racism, people can be racist with no consequences. We'll find out if they have any proof whatsoever that they only did this to African-Americans.

I doubt Denny's had a corporate-wide policy discriminating against minority patrons in the early '90s, but the chain restaurant was sued and lost the lawsuit nonetheless.

If the black shoppers and their lawyers can provide preponderous evidence (say extended video footage) that blacks are singled out to be asked to show their receipts at the exit door of Toys"R"Us, then they have a case IMO.

A couple of years ago I was at Wal-Mart at 3am buying a small portable fan (my A/C went out). I paid with a credit card and they not only wanted to check my ID but they wanted to make sure the signature on my drivers license matched the one on my reciept. Since I had gotten my licence renewed years ago my signature had changed. They would not let me leave the store until the manager was called and said it was OK. It was one of the most embarrassing moments of my life since there were people behind me waiting to check out. Is this a Walmart policy? Has this happened to anyone else? Im a rather large black man by the way.

Personally, I am happy whenever any store asks to see my ID when I use a check or credit card. Clerks appear to be sheepish when asking, but I always let them know that I appreciate the fact they asked for my ID.

My wife had her wallet stolen and the thieves used her gas credit card to fill up at Conoco. Not only did the signature look nothing like my wife's, they completely butchered the spelling of her first and last name. The clerk accepted it with no problem. When I brought that up to the Conoco director of security he replied, "What do you expect for minimum wage?".

i wonder...if people freak out so much over minor inconveniences like being asked to show a receipt, or askign for signature verification, what happens when someone actually serious does happen?

Think the reason they are supposed to check is for charge back purposes. Lets say the card is stolen and some one uses it. The actual cardholder files it as stolen. The credit card company will then dispute the charge with the store, if the signature on the reciept is something thing totally different than the actual cardholder then the store is liable and the credit card company doesn't pay.

When they check they shouldn't be looking for specific thing but just does the sig. resemble the one on the card

If you didn't have a pattern of trying to return stolen merchandise, you wouldn't have to. ;)
