It's not surprising that we've been having so many problems with race recently given that our current president can't make a speech without brewing divisiveness.

The whole second amendment/private security angle is just a justification to support their hobby.

My insight on the matter does not come from the current state I reside in but rather the veteran community and the peers I served with who range from all across the nation. Almost all of them are avid second amendment/NRA fans and almost all of them from my personal experience are fans of firearms because it's a hobby and it's fun for them. They raise the second amendment/private security rhetoric when they have to justify their hobby to anti-gun violence proponents. It's really that simple.

When this developed nation is by a large margin the number one leader in gun violence, gun enthusiast have to put forth a stronger argument than "It's my hobby!". Hence, second amendment/personal security/protection from tyrannical administrations.

Do you honestly think that many of these false militias you see such as in the Bundy ranch fiasco actually are in this because they honestly believe the government is intruding on their civil liberties? No, they do this because they are 'gear queers' as in they love wearing plate carriers with their high speed load outs. It's a hobby for them. They just need a justification to walk around in their gear.

The problem is that just bringing up race is brewing divisiveness for some.

Pointing out inequality is NOT brewing divisiveness, by this logic MLK and Nelson Mandela were race baiters lol.

Some people are so sensitive to it though that just bringing up racial inequality offends them somehow, offends them more than the victims of that inequality they would claim.

So, what did Obama say that was actually divisive to you here?

The president does not have to mention race for the racists to come out of their closet. Racial tensions have the appearance of rising because the closet racists came out of their closet as soon as Barack Obama became the presidential candidate of the Democratic party in 2007.

You have to understand that Bobby thinks the nine black people murdered in Charleston were "modern day racists". Trying to understand his perspective on race is probably going to be a futile effort.

The man can't talk about a hurricane without trying to relate it to some kind of inequity.....to him it's not a natural disaster but an act of racism that was "brewing for decades".

It's beyond pathetic, and it's a fairly big part of the reason we have some of the racial problems we have today. Obama's reaction to the Martin case influenced the crazy white kid in South Carolina, that crazy white kid influenced a crazy black guy in Virginia. By brewing divisiveness, you create the atmosphere for all sorts of bad things. This country needs someone who will unite them after so many years of dealing with a president so intent on dividing the country.....unfortunately though, well look at the candidates. it's not gonna happen.

So what percentage of gun owners are your ex-military peers? The gun nuts I've met, quite many in the last few years, don't really strike me as posturing to secretly defend a hobby. They're pretty damn fervent about carrying openly and defending their right to do so.

It's super annoying when people wish to defend their rights when those rights are viewed as inconvenient to others amirite?

Where did you meet these guys, gun shops? Despite meeting several crazies, I'm going with fchowd0311 on this one.

It's odd that some feel others have to justify why they want to exercise their rights. Do we ask people why they feel like their right to free speech shouldn't be taken away, or why they choose to exercise it?

If free speech resulted in a similar amount of deaths as gun violence, then yes, 'free speech' would need a better argument than "It's my hobby!". Luckily, it does.

Everything should be up for scrutiny. Nothing is infallible. Yes, that includes our constitution.

So it would be better to just ignore the inequity right? He's discussing how

Also, Trayvon Martin was not Roof's motivation but it was actually the racist forums that litter the internet that go on and on about black on black crime and how violent black people are. Roof had a history of being a racist though.

This guy here was a nut, like Roof. It doesn't take them long to latch on to something that they think helps justify killing others. The fact that they were/nuts doesn't make either of them less racist though. I think many people would just prefer to keep guns from racist nuts.

When you are the president and you are preaching nothing but inequity and divisiveness, the nuts on all sides react to it as we've seen. Again, we need someone to come in and try to unite the country after the damage caused by 8 years of a president only interested in dividing people.

Good suggestion! Then we could have a "Are you a naive socialist" test and if you fail we strip you of your right to free speech and your right to vote while setting up your home to quarter soldiers!!!

    That would be great!

I have no idea what you are babbling about. I think you are vastly overstating things. Of course there are people out there who advocate for open carry, but to wrap all gun owners up into this group is just idiotic. I live in the dirty south. The vast majority of the people around me lean to the right. Many of them have conceal carry (because its very easy to get in GA) and none of the people I know carry on an everyday basis. Nor do they primarily have guns for "safety". I keep my gun locked up in a safe just in case someone breaks in and steals it. I dont keep it out for self defense. If someone does try to break in, my gun is the last thing I am worried about.

I'm so sick of soon departing or ex presidents suddenly rediscovering morality.

This is the thing Republicans are now playing as a game.

    Talk about race = divisiveness
Talk about racism = playing the race card
Talk about gun control = not respecting the victims

    It's getting ridiculous.

The tragedy that happened in Virginia was about race and guns, just like South Carolina. They are both nut jobs. They both show that there is a race problem in this country.

Just as blacks face a lot of racism, and it's unfortunate that many people fail to acknowledge that racism still exists and is pervasive. And yes, hate goes both ways. There's a lot of anger from blacks towards whites. That's not right either.

But the thing is that just because there are people who act inappropriately and commit a crime such as this guy did a few days ago, doesn't mean that it's ok for cops to continue to violate the rights of minorities - and that's what bothers me about the right wingers.

Notice that they strip out the fact that all the protests aren't about a white person committing a crime against a black person, it's about a white COP committing a crime against a black person.

But they use any crime from a black person against a white person to make things equivalent. It's so rotten and sad.
