You're right, but what is this "other side." Why are they so upset about racial sensitivity, and why do they see posting threads like these as a legitimate reaction to their angst?

someone who makes a comment like that is not worth discussing anything with. That was an idiotic statement.

This is very easy. Maybe it is because he is a professor molding the minds of our youth. His sole job purpose is to teach young adults and in college to expand their minds. I would think that would be more than enough reason to think this might be a problem. On top of that, If he is this racist and thinks whites are given too many breaks, how do you think his grading curve is for the 2 races? While his grades don't affect all of us, they surely affect the hundreds of students he deals with. No different than the cop in the Gates episode. Even if for some reason you found him to be a racist, he is someone you won't ever have to deal with and has no affect on your life. So how is one open for debate, but not the other?

I'm going to disagree with you FB. Yes you and Lscoladominates are right that racism is about power relationships and for society overall white racism towards blacks is a far more serious problem than the converse. There is a personal cost though to racism even if it is carried out by blacks against whites and at the same time makes it more difficult for racial healing to take place.

I've never fully bought the argument that blacks and other minorities can't be racist towards whites since for so long whites control the power structure. The argument for it often amounts to being dismissive as you appear to be doing or the idea that, "its our turn." If you believe that racism is wrong then it is wrong in every context even while acknowledging a different power relationship.

We all agree that the black professor is in the wrong here but I don't think we should dismiss it as saying it doesn't matter much. Maybe it doesn't spark a national debate but at the minimum it has poisoned the relationship between the black professor and the Columbia community while also setting back progress on race relations.

The only debatable thing here is the OP's commentary of ""

Threads should exist for their subject matter, not for the commentary within. (I just let basso off the hook!)

There are sides in the issue of race. Sides isn't really the right word probably, but points on the spectrum.

At one end you have your Al Sharptons who throw race out anytime a black person is involved in anything. Wait, a black man's credit card got denied? Racism!

Somewhere after them you have them you have the people who know that racism is real, have seen it experienced it, and want to end it. They throw the race card out only when they feel it is appropriate.

After them you have the people who know that racism is real, don't really like to talk about it though, don't know how to tackle it, want it go away but don't like hearing about. They feel that it is mentioned too much.

And after them you have the people who whether they know racism is real or not they don't care. They don't want to hear about or talk about it. Either because they are racist themselves or because it is politically inconvenient.

The bottom two on that spectrum got pretty upset about the Gates incident being made into such a big deal, even some in that second one. All for different reasons of course. It's reactionary on the part of the bottom two to throw out a situation like this. The second to last group is using it as a "See, look! Look at this story. Want to talk about this? No? Didn't think so! Let's stop talking about race all the time!" The last group is saying "See look! Haha black people suck too! This is my political hammer to try and shift the conversation back to where it works for my party!"

that's my point that was probably the first time someone was arrested because he forgot the keys to his own house and he talked back to the police

    I'll do you one better.

Liberals dominate this BBS, conservative voices are not allowed to be heard, and black people get treated differently than white people in society.

    OMG

    You are worthless.

HE BROKE DOWN HIS DOOR, IT LOOKED LIKE AN OBVIOUS ROBERY FROM HIS NEIGHBORS VIEW.

How does someone breaking a door not look like a robbery. It was a misunderstanding and the teacher was a complete douche about the situation. Anyone who talks like that to the police is arrested.

I strongly suspect that police have arrested people in their houses before on similar grounds. NOt saying its right just saying that it has very likely happened.

I don't normally agree with basso (and guess what, I don't this time either!) but this is a good post (just not post of the year)

Most race debates begin from something stupid that people see racism in or react instantly to as racism because of their experiences or stories they've heard. Yet when the shoe is on the other foot they don't like it.

That cop got labeled a racist the minute that story broke. Our president slapped his wrist on national television for what happened at that home. Turns out, the cop didn't do anything wrong.

A Muslim soldier commits an act of terror at an American army base and our president, the media, and many on the left want to find any excuse not to talk about the fact that religion drove this incident. Why? Because the religion in question is Islam and the left is walking on egg shells for that religion right now.

A Christian executes an abortionist who performs very controversial late term abortions, and he is labeled (ON THIS SITE!) a terrorist. No one has a problem mentioning the role his religion played in the incident.

If people could try to pull their head out of their party butts on both sides, they'd realize why debate about issues in this country devolved into what they do.

Funny how you left out the next 2 lines when quoting, because they shot your argument down. To answer your question, just read these lines again, "This is standard procedure, especially when it is a reported break in. How easy would it be if every burglar just said this is my house and the cops said okay and left? Would they ever be able to arrest or stop any of them with your view of procedure?" He had broken into his own home on top of it. There was evidence of a break -in. It was reported as a break-in by a neighbor. It is not like they just went to his house to ID him and arrested him for not showing it. There was an overwhelming probable cause. He thought he was above the law and got arrested.

didnt his own neighbor initially call the cops to report a break-in?

im one of the last people who is going to defend the police, but in this case i do not fault the cop. he was doing his job and trying to make sure the homeowner hadnt actually been taken hostage inside the house and the guy telling him he lived there (gates) was the robber. again, the neighbor called the cops to report a break-in.

should he have been arrested? it sounds like gates was really tearing into the cop and was warned repeatedly to calm down.

the professor is the one who made it a race issue and obama and his comments and stupid 'beer summit' turned the whole thing into a media circus.

i would be curious to hear what obama has to say about this incident since he did interject himself into the gates issue...is this another opportunity for a 'teachable moment'? will we get another beer summit? what was the point of that anyway? we werent even allowed to hear their conversation. the cameras were kept about 50 yards away. the media spent hours and hours talking about what kind of beers each of them drank, but we have no idea what they actually talked about. it was a photo op and nothing more.
