I'll go ahead and beat them to the punch Timing... You're getting your info from a biased source, the evil ACLU.
This whole thread is biased. And it's gotten beyond the point that no one is even listening to what anyone else is saying. We're just picking out lines and tearing each other apart. Whatever. The thing is, no one has really said anything false. I guess we're going to agree to disagree. Again, I'm not saying anything bad about any of you. Most of these are generalizations. Have fun!
alright dudes, i love all races but i have a question. bgm and me are going to wear these kickass afro wigs to all the rockets games we goto. neither of us are black so do you think anyones going to be offended? i hope not, maybe they'll just point and laugh=)
Actually you have. You directly stated that, even after pole taxes were instituted, "They (blacks) were given the same opportunity to vote as everyone else." You then stated "I know those were done to keep blacks away, but not entirely. There were other reasons. But what you said brings up a valid point. While that was not specifically done to blacks, it was directed towards them." Again, the pole taxes and citizenship tests were designed for the express purpose of keeping black people from voting. There was no other reason, nothing hidden at all. It would help if you just possibly recognized that you were incorrect instead of stating the same thing over and over and digging yourself deeper...
dylan- i think poll taxes were used before they were put in the constitution. they were used on the state or local level. so people were making money from them before they were put into national law. so they were designed to make money as well. oh well, i'm gone again...no one will listen to me anyway, even when i do point out that someone else is wrong
This has to be one of the more "entertaining" threads that I have ever read here. Some great posts by several people including some great ones by Elvis Costello. f4p's post made me LOL when I read it! 2 things that I want to address here: The first is that there are a lot of white people, IMO, who really don't have a clue about what black people have gone through. I say this as a white male who grew up in a town of where there were probably no more than 20 blacks in the whole freaking town! When I graduated from high school in '91, there was only one black student out of 257! So, I guess I can see how someone fails to see stereotypes, but I don't know anything about princess' background. Maybe she grew up in a similar situation like I did, I don't know. I do know that it wasn't until I saw the Fuzzy Zoeller thing on Sportscenter (Hayes Street had eluded about it earlier) that I realized that fried chicken and watermelon was an offensive stereotype to blacks. I won't repeat what Zoeller said, but it was directed at Tiger Woods and done in, IMO, a sarcastic, demeaning manner. Now, to me, that is being racist. I have found that there are certain things that are discussed on this board in this forum that are like timebombs, and racism is definitely one of those. Personally, I don't like talking about it because I know that I'm ignorant about it; however, I like to read about it because it helps me to understand better about it. I remember when I was a sophomore at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), my roommate (who was white) and I became friends with this black guy from Chattanooga who lived next door. He was always nice and friendly to us when we were all aorund the dorms, but if either of us saw him on campus with his black friends, he would never look at us, let alone speak. This used to piss my roommate off all the time and he would call this guy on it. I didn't take it as personally as my roommate did, but it did bother me. I guess I could understand why this happened, but other times, I really wondered about it. The second thing I wanted to talk about in this thread was this: Princess, princess, princess, princess......, you have had a rough time in your first month here, huh? I don't know if Lynus ever told you about me or you have read the BBS enough in the past to know my story but I feel your pain. I admire that you have the guts to go against some of the bigger guns here in Jeff, Doctor of Dunk, and rimbaud, but like Jeff said if you are going to bring up something that is like a timebomb in racism, be prepared for people to respond and to respond quickly, especially if they disagree with you. I'm staying out of this...I have already contributed my thoughts on it up above, but I wish that you wave a white flag or something because you are getting your ass punked in this thread. I'm saying this because I think that you will be able to bring some value to this BBS, especially considering that we don't have a lot of female posters here. However, I'm afraid that you are going to get burned out or do something or say something so outrageous that you are going to wind up getting banned. Believe me...I have been at that point here. Here's a post that I would like for you to read, it's the long one addressed to gettinbranded. I think that you might gain something out of it (it will give you something to think about): http://bbs.clutchcity.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25246&perpage=30&pagenumber=4 Hey, I love this BBS, probably more than anyone who is not an administrator and I have learned that you just can't take things so personal here. I do still struggle with that, but I feel that I'm doing better. There was probably a time where I was regarded as one of the most controversial posters here. Hell, I argued with everyone including Lynus and I probably have pissed off a lot of members. At first, I used to think, "who cares, f*** them!" Who knows, maybe you feel the same way. However, it does matter . I think Jeff talked about making a first impression. I know that there are people out there that don't take anything that I post seriously because of things that I did in the past here. That is my fault. All I can do is to try to do better and become a better overall poster. I think that you want to stay on this BBS for a long time, so I think that this will matter to you. Just realize that people will disagree with you, handle it in a civil manner (which I think you have done), but then move on . Granted, you picked a subject that is not that easy to do, but I think you understand what I mean. Lynus was a very good person to talk to through email. You have always said how much he loved this BBS. Why don't you ask him for his advice on this the next time you talk to him? I am sure that he is thrilled that you are posting, but do you want him to find out before he is even through with basic training that you are no longer posting here because you got burned out or banned? Just a thought...tell him I said hello. BTW - You will not break my post per day average record, although I'm flattered that it looks like you are trying. I'm just kidding..I'll even add a smilie for effect. Bottom line is don't worry about what others think but be prepared to be challenged when you come up with stuff that is unpopular to the norm here.
Put in the constitution? I don't think they were ever put in the Constitution. I'm not sure where you're getting this idea? They were eventually declared unconstitutional for violating the Constitution. As someone who takes Constitutional law quite seriously, I don't think we can "agree to disagree." There's plenty of stuff where that's possible (read: international relations, God, etc), but here I think you're just flat-out mistaken.
DOD, go to MonsterBoard job forum one day, and look at the posters in that arena. Many lighter complexion folks with high-tech/advance degrees looking for this "layup" in life you think they have.
<b>For example, I don't think Jeff is that way, and he's white. He goes out of his way to find a happy medium.</b> Hey, hey, hey, don't bring me back into this one DOD!!! I got out a few hundred posts ago. <b>Many lighter complexion folks with high-tech/advance degrees looking for this "layup" in life you think they have.</b> That has nothing to do with skin color. That is, as Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill said recently, "the genius of capitalism." Nevermind if people get screwed in the process.
I get you have the "Oliver Stone Conspiracy Theory Complex." lol Thats definitely apparent! I do think someone needs a little self-affirmation. In fact, I think you will find a direct link between ALL KIDS, black or white that receive this and their later success in life. Don't be a quitter DOD, keep swinging
Wow this is way more than I have time to read...but I will just say, that people these days take things waaaaaay to seriously. It's ridiculous how everyone feels they need to put themselves in the "victim"role. I don't see anything the slightest bit racist in advertising chicken If they were advertising pizza or spaghetti for Italian month, would that be racist ?
I'm an ethnic Italian. And I'm frickin' proud of being a scion of the civilization that produces delicious pastas. We Italians know cooking and style... just not much about efficiency . I'm not offended by it... because it's not a negative stereotype. I also don't mind Italian's reputation for being skillful lovers .
Right on... Be proud of your heritige ! What is negative about chicken These people crying racism should be proud of the fact their ancestors introduced America to the pleasures of fried chicken.
Princess, Why your fascination with disproving lynchings on a large scale? I mentioned this earlier, but I will mention it again in more detail: Recently (within the last 2-3 years) there was a large exhibition of lynching postcards. That is, postcards that were created to commemorate lynchings. These things were sent, traded, collected, enjoyed by many many "normal" people all over the U.S. From a review of such an exhibition: Here are some pictures for those who want to see examples of the postcards. Oh, your continued insistance on racism being worse in the North is just plain wrong. Sure, things still were not great there, but blacks could actually have real jobs, be listed in city directories, even had their own "elite" classes, etc. Perhaps you remember the Great Migration of 1913-46? Blacks continually moved North starting after reconstruction. Why?...because conditions were better up there. A great many also moved to Europe because things were even better there. In general, Incidentally, Italians have protested The Sopranos for being a negative stereotype. DARO, See "Ethnic Notions" or something similar to learn why black-fried chicken references are not so innocent. Also, this was not something "introduced" by black people. African diet is mostly grain (millet/rice, etc), vegetables, chicken or meat - type things. African food is quite good, actually. There is also a huge black vegan population, based upon their religion - an African Judaism. I realized I never stated my opinion on the actual incident. I do not neccessarily think the store people were racist, just ignorant.
Yea those postcards are sad to look at.I'm in no way condoning any of those horrific acts...but alot of those were accused of crimes and I'd be willing to bet many whites were dealt this form of mob justice as well. Heres is a link on the history of soul food that talks about fried chicken... http://www.foxhome.com/soulfood/htmls/soulfood.html btw I'm of Irish decent and I don't get upset everytime a liquor store runs a sell for St.Patricks day.
