You're kidding me right? You really think things like the IRB existed back then? You really think they told her they were taking her cells for study? How the hell would she even know about compensation if they never told her that they were taking her cells to begin with? Please don't be so naive as to compare your summer research with that conducted in 50s when virtually no rules were set to keep anyone accountable.
The article clearly says that they family was not told that they were taking her cells or anything. And I never made the insinuation that it was OK for them to do so. My only reason for including my experience was so that I could provide an example of how times have changed from then and to now. There are many protections and rules set forth to prevent any injustices such as this. If you are angered by my perspective on whether or not the family should receive compensation, then come out and say so. I'd be glad to have a discussion about it.
