Apparently what Gates did was illegal....which was cause a scene and public disturbance outside his house...even though such a scene occurred on his property. either the law is that this is illegal (which from the articles, it makes it sound like it is), or it isn't illegal. If it isn't, then the cop did his job poorly.

But from nothing of the incident so far is there any evidence that points to the cop as escalating the situation. the cop even went outside to de-escalate (is that a word?) the situation, and Gates still couldn't help himself but to act like an idiot.

Why is this even a big deal? Either the police report is truthful and Gates is an idiot, or you don't believe the police report, and the subsequent police report, and the 7 eye witnesses and it's a big race conspiracy.

    ???

The comment improved Obama's standing with blacks? Please. Obama could drop a deuce on the couch of every AA household in this country and they'd still be in love with him. What's next, the p*rn industry trying to improve their standing with horny dudes?

If you strip out the AA support for Obama, his approval numbers among the other demographic constituencies has really nose dived since he took office. Telling...

It is always a big deal when someone is arrested for no reason. But more importantly this is the D & D and that it why this thread keeps getting posters.

No, I personally don't believe this is a big race conspiracy or some other inartful term shirking blame from professor.

And all the witnesses and police report corroborated was that he was argumentative and disrespectful. Are you not allowed to be? and if you invite a already pissed person outside to continue his ranting and raving only to turn around and arrest him I don't think you are serving and protecting the public good frankly.

Just a scenario I want to ask the people who say yelling isn't illegal. I'd like to see you go up to a cop and start yelling in his face. I'd like to see what the cop does.

The cop went to his residence. Big difference from randomly walking up to a cop.

I'm still unsure. Why don't you go be disrespectful and cuss out a cop. Report back to us on how that went.

Did you really just say that he could release fecal matter on black people's couches and they wouldn't care?

I also didn't realize that blacks were all alcoholics.

"I'm not politically correct. I still say 'black,' I do. Because 'African American' -- there's no bonus; it's not going to make your life any easier. You don't see black people standing around going, 'Woo yeah, African American. Man, I tell you, this beats the hell out of being black. We should have made the switch years ago.'" - Wanda Sykes

P.S. - Is McCain still winning in Michigan?

A cop who went to his residence to protect it from a possible burglary? Hell, if that's a good reason to be belligerent towards a cop, I'd tell a cop to piss off after asking him directions.

How about I believe the police report (for the most part), and think Gates acted like an idiot, AND I think the police officer showed very poor judgement in not leaving the scene when it was clear it was Gate's house, that Gate's would not be a danger to himself or others, and that he could defuse the situation entirely be walking away.

What was the point in arresting him?

Enforcement of public disturbance laws are not 'either yes or no' scenarios. They're mainly about ending the disturbance.

Why was he acting that way? He was in his own house and he had to know that once the cop figured that out, all would be okay. I mean, the cop was trying to protect HIS HOUSE. Like I said earlier, when this happened to me, I was just grateful the cops showed up so fast. That helps me sleep better at night, frankly.

And I don't want to live in a society where people can just be totally abusive and disrespectful to cops to their faces and the cop is just supposed to say "yes sir, thank you very much." and drive away...

If a cop demanded my ID after someone reported a break in at my house, I'd be grateful too. Comforted that they're taking it seriously.

But I don't have the ego of a Ivy League professor. And I'm not black. So I've never been profiled, and I get a table at Denny's if I want one. So I'll not project how I think I'd react to the professor, and just leave it that I think he acted like an idiot ;) .

Cop who arrested black scholar is profiling expert

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090723/ap_on_re_us/us_harvard_scholar_disorderly

Great stuff! So this cop teaches racial profiling classes. It seems to me he knew exactly which buttons to press to get him to explode, while making himself look like the good guy. Bonus: Obama gets up on national stage and answers a "stupidly" question.

Letting Rush and his ever-smaller circle of ditto-heads convince you that liberal in America has anything to do with socialism is your one way ticket to tin-hattery.

I'm not saying that the cop wasn't there to arrest a black man and he wasn't being racist at all. Gates had a piss poor attitude, but you aren't the man and he can say whatever he wants when he's on his private property. He did give the cop his ID and that should have been the end of it.

They both showed poor judgment. Should the cop be fired for it? Hell no. Should he have to apologize? Hell no. It's not like Gates was physically threatening him.

However, I do feel that Gates does have a point that he was profiled. If he was upset about it, this is America, the man has the right to kick and scream and bring attention to a problem that still exists today.

Is it just me or is the cop's name extremely unfortunate in this case...
