Then obviously the officers did not handle the situation properly. If they knew it was such a petty crime and was a waste of time, they should have realized their mistake and left the premises. Last I checked its' not a crime to disagree or argue with cops.

I didn't say waste of time I said waste of money. He would have serious lawyers and he already spent 4 hours in jail.

seriously though, you know how many times cops take drunks to a drunk tank, hold them for a few hours then drop PI charges.

Must happen a lot in bigger cities where there is more criminal activity because where I live they pursue those charges to the fullest.

I agree with Obama on this. At the end of the day, Gates should not have been arrested after showing his ID. At worst he was being an arrogant insulting d1ck. This should not be something he should be arrested for. The policeman just couldn't let his ego get bruised. Now we have this circus.

I love the PR battle. Crowley is lining up Reggie Lewis' widow, Sully from the pub, Ted who bats clean up on his softball team, and the silent white majority who despise the racist label. Gates has the support of the academics, mayor, governor, president, blacks, latinos and everyone who's ever fought the law.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense when you have an overflow of such incidents and people.

I thought you lived in a town where Otis Campbell was your main criminal and they let him go every morning.

He has a history on the subject.

People tend to forget that one of Obama’s big initiatives as a member of IL state legislature was a bill on racial profiling (he was able to get the police union to endorse; no small feat). So it would make sense that he would have very strong opinions on the subject.

    Nope

I asked basso because he seems to be the BBS leader in forming opinions based, not on fact, but opinion.

I agree. Even if he was fully informed on the event, he should not have offered an opinion.

    1. People will think he's siding with Gates because he's a friend, because he's a professor, because he's black, not because of his sober and impartial evaluation of the event.

    2. How demoralizing it is for police officers to have the President publicly condemn one of their number for something half of them would have done in that guy's place. It is common for cops to arrest people for minor charges, knowing that they will be dropped, just to make the guy spend a few hours in jail.

    3. I'd give him a pass on #2 if he pointed out the widespread inherent abuse of power involved in using unprosecutable arrests to teach someone a lesson, and urged some reform in how police would be allowed to conduct business, but he didn't.

    4. He is in a position of authority, but not the cop's boss. If I'm in finance, the VP of Sales should go talk to my boss if he's got a problem with me; he shouldn't get in my face and he certainly shouldn't be going to our clients to say I'm doing my job wrong.
