Actually, the neighbor called in that she saw 2 black males. She had to have seen Gates. Gates even said he walked back outside to push the door in. Unless, she has x-ray vision then Gates couldn't have been inside the house when she called police.

The cop and the professor both sound like douche bags.

The cop should have been smarter. It just brings ba press to the cops. I think most people already hate the police as is.

Right you are - I skipped to the police report and the statement on behalf of the arrested. In the o.p. it does indeed mention the caller saw two black males.

    Still:

Porch at night from across the street (or so I assume)
    An unusual car out front
One of the men going to the back of the residence while the non-resident stays on the porch trying what looks like forced entry

I would have called 911 and suggested they bring some backup bacon - then got a beer and snacks before settling in to watch the show.

My thoughts exactly. I think its good the police dropped all charges (Al Sharpton is crying somewhere) as well as Gates. Probably felt stupid a couple of hours later.

From what I read, it seems to me the professor over reacted. What the hell were the cops supposed to do if they received calls of a break in? Even if it was the caller's mistake, the cops still need to verify this. So if the professor just showed his DRIVER'S LICENSE, then everything would have been okay. But, he had to yell at the officers, making him look more suspicious.

I don't have any respect for Jesse Jackson. When I read his name, I KNEW he was going to say something negative to intensify the situation. This is like his trademark. Whenever there is something going on that involves a black person, he'll just assume the black person is a victim. As a spiritual leader, he should know better and not create divides.

Agreed. There was obviously some conflict, and Ogletree's report mentions none of it. The officers report vividly details his account of the story.

Great, now Obama is practically calling racism. He said the officer "acted stupidly" for arresting Gates despite showing proof and ID. Maybe Obama should pay attention to the police report: Gates was arrested for disorderly conduct, not breaking and entering.

Gates should have complied with the officer, who is just doing his job by following through on a 911 call, instead of being all pissy and entitled. Not everybody in the world knows who you are, and it does not give you special treatment.

Didn't you hear Obama say Gates was a friend. Its pretty obvious he picked a side on this, facts be damned.

He also said he doesn't know all the facts of the case, so I guess it's not surprising he would side with his friend. I think he chose some pretty clear-cut words despite claiming ignorance.

Obama should have dodged the questions instead of injecting his own opinion on the situation. By stated the officers acted "stupidly", he clearly already found the officers in the wrong, even though he admitted he didn't have all the facts.

This was plain stupid. Gates is not above the law, though by his actions he thought he was. He got exactly what he deserved. If an officer is investigating a break in, no amount of shouting at him, is going to make him leave before he leaves. Gates is just an egotistical Harvard professor who made far too big of a deal of the issue.

Also, this is like going to a grocery store and when the clerk tells you what you own you pull out a check, and then refuse to show the clerk your id. "why, because I'm a black man in American." No, because you are an idiot obstructing my job. If this officer loses his job for this Gates & his cronies should be really ashamed of themselves.

If I were the officer, I certainly wouldn't resign if it comes to that, I'd fight back. Apparently, Gates has a beef with law enforcement in general and perhaps the next time when a real burgular decides to break in the house and gates calls 911, maybe law enforcerment should refuse to go out to investigate. Then he can really say, "why, because I'm a black man in America?" No because you are in America period. I certainly don't see you complaining about the benifits of living here.

uh, the charges were dropped. Seems that's a clear indication that the officers were "in the wrong."

No, they were dropped because Gates is getting preferential treatment because he has al sharpton and the rest of the talking heads marching on washington for a disorderly conduct charge. "why, because I'm a black man in america." no because you are an idiot that don't know how to cooperate peacefully with the police.

No, they were dropped because they didn't want to spend that much money to convict someone of such a petty crime.

If the PD thought their officer acted incorrectly, they would have issued an apology, remember Ryan Moats?

I seriously doubt it. He offered an opinion about his friend. I don't think it was smart to do it so publicly during his own primetime healthcare deal, but whatever. The top 2 headlines on yahoo about the conference are about the race crap now.
