The officer should have given Gates a card and written his name and number on it. Then there'd be no ambiguity.

I thought his report was a little squishy on whether he had been successful in identifying himself to Gates.

The other cops on the Cambridge PD support their comrade. Color me completely unsurprised.

How sad is it when the so called 'leading scholar' of AA relations at Harvard uses punk talk when interacting with law enforcement. That's just embarrassing, actually. It really underscores what a farce his entire job really is.

Probably blue, just like the police who choose not to cross the thin blue line to criticize a colleague.

You might as well have posted an article claiming that scuba divers say that water is wet. That is as much of a no-brainer as cops rallying to support their peers.

Skippy, like most of The Won's friends, seems to have a tax problem.

[rquoter]A foundation created and led by Henry Louis Gates Jr. is amending its federal tax form after questions were raised about $11,000 paid to foundation officers -- funds that the original tax form called research grants, but that should have been classified as compensation, ProPublica reported. When the payments are accounted for accurately, the foundation's administrative expenses will account for 40% of its spending in 2007, not 1% as originally reported to the IRS. Gates created the Inkwell Foundation with the goal of supporting work on African and African-American literature, history and culture, the article said. The report by ProPublica also noted that some of the actual grants went to people close to Gates. Gates told ProPublica that the foundation's second-largest grant, for $6,000, went to his fiancée, Angela DeLeon,. DeLeon was formerly on the foundation board and Gates said he recused himself from a vote on the grant. A grant of $500 went to Evelyn Higginbotham, chair of the foundation's board and chair of Harvard University's Department of African and African-American studies. Gates said she didn't vote on the grant. ProPublica is an organization that conducts investigative journalism. The article noted that Gates -- the Harvard scholar who is a leading figure in African-American studies whose arrest at his home has set off a national debate about the way black men are treated by law enforcement -- also serves on ProPublica's board.[/rquoter]

I'm surprised they missed that in the original reports!

"Professor Gates, who is amending his federal tax returns, had a confrontation with a police officer in front of his home...."

Does he sideline as a country singer too?

If you want this whole thing to go away, why would you want such a meeting to take place?

IMO, this literally could've been non-story that it should be even after the arrest. But the fact that Gates knew a ton of really influential people made the matter bigger and worse. I really wish Obama would've kept himself out of it. Nothing good can come out of this.

Personally, I think getting together and "make up" seems like a half-assed approach. Gates' story indicates that he truly believed Crowley racial profiled, and then wrongfully arrested him. If so, then Gates should go ahead and petition to get the officer punished. At the very least, demote his position as the teacher of how not to racially profile. Settling for anything less would indicate that he was wrong. Not the officer.

    Why exactly?

    EDIT.

If you have read through the thread, you would have seen that I side with no particular person in this case.

So you are pretty sure that Gates cannot move forward and have a common ground with Crowley?

Gut you don't have any doubts that Crowley can?

I didn't say I wanted the meeting to take place just interested in the results of the meeting since it is already going to happen.

Exactly what I said earlier in the thread. Why take a police report as total truth? Who knows what was embellished on and what was not? I'm not saying the police report is total bs but I don't know if it is 100% true either.

    I assume you mean "But"?

Crowley already said he isn't apologizing. So rather, I'm guessing he won't(ignoring Obama's intervention for a minute here, which I'm sure can be very persuasive).

The problem I have is that the two accounts, Gates and the police report, are basically as far apart as they can possibly be. I simply doubt that there's enough miscommunication and bad memory to the point where neither side is lying. And it was just all a big misunderstanding.

    I see. Got it.

i haven't read the whole thread, but i think the whole Gates-aquiddic issue is generally hilarious, a prime example of Obama's inflated opinion of himself and his mission "to save the world."

in any case, the last several pages seemed to indicate you thought crowley was in the wrong, but sorry if i missed something earlier that indicated otherwise.

It seems that didn't come across well. What I meant to say was that it shouldn't be a misunderstanding, due to how far apart the two statements are. And that most likely, someonewas fibbing or outright lying. I have no clue who it is. If Crowley did that, then Gates can't let that slide. If it's Gates who did that, then he should just back off and apologize.

wow, just a coincidence i'm sure.

[rquoter]BREAKING — “Philadelphia, PA – Vice President Joe Biden and Attorney General Eric Holder today [will announce] $1 billion in grants to fund the hiring and rehiring of law enforcement officers all across the country under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The grants will be awarded to 1,046 law enforcement agencies from all 50 states and will provide 100 percent of the approved salary and benefits for 4,699 officers for three years. ... ‘A big part of the Recovery Act is about building communities – making them as strong as they can be, allowing every American family to live a better life than the one they are leading now,’ said Vice President Joe Biden. ‘And we can’t achieve the goal of stronger communities without supporting those who keep our streets safe.’” [/rquoter]
