So you believe that armed police officers should use physical force against elderly people who need a cane to get around?

Ok, so I'll change my official position to yes, but only if the elderly person with the cane is a race-baiter...there.

I am not sure the cop did anything "wrong". He did his job. Now, if he wasn't sure Gates lived there, then he has an OBLIGATION to question Gates.

That's to protect the owner of the home - which is Gates. What if someone was really robbing that home - black or white, and the showed some school id - which was them - should a cop then walk away and take the risk they had just been dupped???

Someone thought they saw a break-in, when does a cop know for sure that it's not the case. And if Gates was shouting degroatory remarks at the cop the whole time, he deserved to get arrested.

So you think the black sargeant is cool with a white officer being racist against a black Harvard professor. Interesting. Unlikely, but uninteresting.

I think you would be QUITE surprised

Racism in the departments are Cultural.
Meaning it is indoctrinated throughout the system alot of times.
They are drilled with a THEM OR US mentality
    US being cops
    THEM being everyone else

    From I have experienced

I wish I had a nickel for every geriatric black man who has burgled my home, only to bamboozle the cops with some fake ID showing my home as his place of residence.

Don't ever let the cane fool you!

This is what I don't understand. Why did he deserve to get arrested for that? It isn't a crime. I've seen plenty of people who say that because Gates acted out of line and yelled at the cop, so he deserved to get arrested.

If he commits a crime he deserves to get arrested. He didn't.

Gates, who has faced plenty of racism in his time on this earth, has worked hard to over come that, and managed to build a spectacular career and accomplish a great deal, was being questioned after coming back from a trip in China.

The guy probably just wanted to go home and go to sleep, and he might have ended up feeling humiliated and questioned as if he might be a criminal after all he's done in his career.

That being said, I feel he probably went off and was acting out of line, and may have been completely hysterical.

That doesn't make what Gates did OK, but it doesn't mean he deserves to be arrested.

Now he's geriatric? Freakin...unbelievable. I knew he had a cane...I think President Obama called him middle-aged...now he's a freakin geriatric?

Anybody want to start calling him a paralytic so we can get Gates some more sympathy?

White cop arrests legendary, black, paralyzed Harvard scholar.

    There, better?

Since when is being belligerent, on your own property no less, a crime?

If the president himself is backtracking, it is a pretty good idea that he realizes there was fault on Gates' side and that this was not a racial profiling case it is billed as.

Gates was wrong, plain and simple.

You ever heard of disturbing the peace. Just because it is your property means nothing.

    Really?

So you still believe Gates was right? That is incomprehensible to me. But okay.

First, Massachusetts has some really amusing archaic language in its laws.

But more to the point, it seems that yes, he did commit a crime. Disturbing the peace, under Chapter 272 (Crimes Against Chastity, Morality, Decency and Good Order) Section 53 & 54 of the General Laws of Massachusetts as well as Chapter 9.08.010 of the Cambridge City Code (Disorderly conduct--Profanity and insulting language).

He may have been "tricked" into going out on his porch, but once there, he appears to have been in technical violation of the law.
