so anyone can call anyone stupid even if they don't have the facts or proof as long as the one being called stupid is not a cop?

Yep that has been my experience with 90 percent of the cops I have known and had the displeasure of dealing with even the ones I knew on a personal level.

Cops a a-holes, there's no doubt about that.

But seriously, Gates pissed the cop off. And that's just stupid. The cop arrested him for disorderly conduct - because cops want to be respected and if someone is continually insulting them, they are going to get mad.

Being uncooperative with a cop is disorderly conduct. The cop has to do his job regardless of Gate's race.

For Gates and Obama to make this about race is too much.

here's a simple reading test for you

was Gates arrested because he did not show his driver's license or because of something else?

BTW, in Texas, a police officer can take you to jail for any offense except speeding(legislators all speed so they didn't want cops to have the power to take them to jail). They can take you to jail for seat belts, registration sticker, or anything other thing they can make up. Many cops use this power to harass Johns that frequent areas of prostitution. Its any easy way to "clean up" an area.

And that's the real problem. Gates obviously made it about race...by Obama bashing the police and defending Gates, the poor, feeble, can walking, middle-aged, man, Obama made it about race also, and that's a huge problem.

Not ok to arrest a black man for disorderly contact, especially if he's highly respected by the President. Look out, you'll get called stupid.

He's was arrested for being an ass (disorderly conduct) to a cop which is not against the law from I thought. This is why they dropped the charges. There was no way they could make it stick. However a cop unfortunately has the right arrest him and take to the station for almost anything including a trumped up charge.

These are my feelings on the situation:

    1. The cops probably should not have arrested the guy regardless of how much of a jerk he was being.

    2. The guy shouldn't have been a jerk to the cops. It never turns out well. You cannot act like a jerk to a cop and then feign disbelief when they give you hell for it. Is it wrong? Yeah. Are you just as much at fault when all you had to do was stay calm? Yeah.

    3. I worked with a few cops when I interned at the DA's office a couple of summers ago. Working there gives you both a healthy respect and a healthy dose of cynicism for those who wear the uniform. It's definitely not the 9/10 ratio Batman suggests but there are a sizable portion of cops who are looking for a reason.

    4. Most of the interactions I've had with cops have been normal. Some were pleasant some were standoffish but I've never been in a situation where I felt the cop treated me unfairly. I suspect the reason is because I generally show the cop more respect than they show me. It's just common sense. Is this always a sure fire way to avoid problems? No. I've had friends of all races get into trouble with cops who were just trying to ruin somebody's day. The problem is the cop is no matter how bad you think a cop is treating you they can make things much harder for you if you agitate them. What's the point? This isn't to excuse the cops' behavior in situations like this but, really, there's nothing good that can come out of being a jerk to the cop in the middle of the situation. Short of having a dashboard cam video of a cop beating you holding two forms of ID with his grandmother there to verify there's not much you're going to be able to do (even then they'll just get paid leave while they are investigated). This doesn't mean you should roll over and give up your constitutional rights if they're being trampled over but you don't have to be a jerk in doing so. If you choose to act that way you are choosing to do so knowing that it's going to make things worse for you and you accept those consequences. Again, I'm not passing judgment or even saying this is right. This is just the practicality of the situation.

Cops have to be a-holes. It's not the type of job you will do well if you're a pushover.
