No, you're just being ridiculous. It's too easy to respond to a law enforcement office with quick, honest answers with no belligerence and attacks. No no, we have to throw something in there about being black...and the cop being white, and a little jab about a black man in his home, etc...

No, that's what you're supposed to do.

Why is that a sad attitude?

Then why did you say Obama's stupidly comment is, for lack of a better word, stupid (you said you don't agree with it actually) then go on to justify this somehow with the "they risk their lives daily" statement?

What is a normal ID? When a cop asks you for an ID, wtf do you give him? Stop being an ass, you know everyone gives their DL.

If he would have been calm from the start, and just given him his DL, it would have proved his residence, there would be no problem. The fact that he was so damn ignorant, the fact that he was whining about racism and the fact that he simply gave him a school idea all points to him wanting something to happen.

Might surprise you but I don't completely blame the police in this situation but I think they, along with all parties, are guilty of blowing it way out of proportion.

It's a sad attitude because you're unappreciative of sacrifices that other people make so that you can be safe on a daily basis. Your argument is that they do it willingly. Well, duh. We're not robots. We're humans, we make choices. That's what makes us different from animals. Instinct vs. reasoning and choice.

I didn't justify anything with "they risk their lives daily". In case you couldn't read the past posts, "they risk their lives daily" was meant for me to get across to you and others that I feel police officers deserve a higher degree of respect because of the fact that they are law enforcement and they especially deserve it from the highest officer in the land, the President of the United States. Now, let's not get stupid here. Did I say President Obama should give the cop a pass for doing something bad because he's a cop and he deserves our respect...NO, didn't say that. What I'm saying is that out of respect for a law enforcement officer who was doing his job, President Obama should have kept his mouth shut and reserved judgment for a later time.

I don't see why that's so hard to understand.

I think you and 99% of most people would.

If you just broke down the door to your house, and a cop comes knocking on your door responding to a break in call it would be completely understandable. I would actually be embarrassed they showed up and apologize for wasting their time.

I would, too. No back-talk, no screwing around, just do what they ask and let it go. Heck, I might even thank them for responding to the call so quickly because next time it may not be me breaking into my own door!

Would I go off on the cop and tell him the only reason he's there is because I'm Mexican and he hates Mexican's, and blah blah blah...no. That kind of crap has to stop and people have to start being accountable for their actions. Some of those actions come in the form of stupid comments and borderline-racism, in my opinion.

I haven't read this thread, but this situation reminds me of a time I had in West University about 21 years ago. One of many bad run-ins with stupid ass cops.

I was home for the summer from college, visiting my parents. I was on my way somewhere else but I stopped by my parents' house (my house when in town) just to take a leak. As soon as I pulled up I was stopped by West U cops. The conversation went like this.

Cops: What are you doing here?
    Batman: I live here.
Cops: Well, how come I never seen you before?
Batman: Because you don't live here. Why did you stop me?
Cops: Don't get smart. Give me your license.
Batman: Glad to. Here it is. It has the address of the house I'm at on it. Are we done? Why did you stop me?
    Cops: You just sit tight.
Batman: Okay, but I just stopped here - at HOME - because I had to pee. You see that the address of this house is on my license and I didn't break any law at all. Do you think I got a fake license with the address of the house I wanted to rob on it? I really have to pee. Are you going to tell me why you pulled me over or let me do that?
Cops: Keep your hands where we can see them and sit tight.

15 minutes while they run my license looking for a warrant or some other reason to harass me.

Then they give back my license and leave.

No sorry. No have a nice day.

And I'm freaking white. In West U.

Cops are occasionally in it for the right reasons and those cops I respect. Certainly I've been in need of police protection and have appreciated the hell out of it.

But 9 out of 10 cops? In it for the gun and authority that you can get with (barely) a high school degree. 9 out of 10? Assholes with a superiority complex and nothing better to do than **** with people.

I respect the risks they take, I respect the danger of the job. I do NOT respect the badge because the people in charge allow too much bad behavior on the part of the group - people who run around with guns and authority to do whatever the hell they want to do.

I'm a white guy and if I meet a cop in a neutral situation my first take is I don't trust him and I expect to be ****ed over, not helped. I've had too many bad experiences where I got screwed by cops. I can't even imagine how much worse I'd feel about it if I was black.

how do you determine the later time?

is it directly proportional to the number of times the officer's life was risked?

what if he's a rookie or just a desk officer?

I believe I said I respect them and not that I am unappreciative of anything they do.

This is where I disagree, I don't believe they deserve a higher degree of respect just because they are law enforcement. I respect a police officer just like I respect a waiter. They're both doing jobs that make my life easier but I don't put one over the other or give one more respect than the other.

Thanks for explaining what you meant on the Obama statement, it clarified it.

no I don't care what you say because you are either illiterate or a liar. If you really read the police report, the cop clearly asked for a photo ID and Gates provided him one

the cop didn't have any problem with the ID not being a DL

This is getting stupid and you don't deserve an answer because you're not looking for truth, you're looking to argue.

How do you determine the later time...

Yeah, take the number of times he risked his life, multiply it my the days of the year 365, divide it by his age 30 something, subtract the number of people he's arrested (who knows), and there you go...that's how many days you wait...

Why does it matter how long you have to wait? It doesn't. You miss the whole point. The President shouldn't involve himself in something like that especially admitting he didn't know all of the facts at the time. And if he can't get all the facts he needs in a reasonable time then he shouldn't comment at all.
