I got the free Prime trial and ended up paying $79 for one year. It has already paid for itself.
Yes I coordinate with family members, but looks like only me and my wife are going this year. I plan to go to Toys R Us, Wal-Mart, & Staples. Might go to Sears, Best Buy, and Target. Don't live in Houston, so I may not matter at all anyway. No I plan on spending anywhere from $200 - $700. It depends on if I decide to buy the Washer/Dryer combo from Sears.
Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to get with some of you tomorrow and Wednesday for a story I'm doing for Friday morning.
Oh, and here's my first post on Black Friday. Enjoy. http://blogs.houstonpress.com/hairballs/2010/11/five_reasons_not_to_shop_on_bl.php Five Reasons Not to Shop on Black Friday
I have no intention of Black Friday shopping, but this article blows! Trampled to death? It's too cold and uncomfortable for you so it should be that way for everyone? These are pretty pathetic reasons for a legit article. Unless it's a joke column in which case, I take back my comments and will fix my sarcasm meter. Stupid read.
it was obviously a joke, unless you think he's serious about #1 I'm going shopping tomorrow with some people, don't bother with the Black Friday crap. Also #3 is pretty amusing, Oprah annoys the **** out of me.
If I ever go to grad school for economics, my paper would be about how people rationalize wasting several hours their free time during a holiday just to save hundreds of dollars. Our society is all about time and cutting corners, so this "tradition" is pretty ass backwards. One part of it has to be about bragging rights and a story, but part of me doesn't want to believe that that is something worthy to brag about.
I worked a lot of retail when I was younger and so I have a natural aversion to anything Black Friday. These days I always say if there's something I'd really want I'd go. But so far I just stay away. And really, it's starting to appear that a place like Amazon will make it less likely that I would even need to bother.
Number 3 is really scary. I do like buying games, researching games, and looking at games more than playing them. When it comes to console games, I probably spend more time deciding to buy a game than playing a game I bought sometimes...
These two. If you have make good money, chances are your time is too precious to be wasted on consumerism like Black Friday. Good money also means not caring about paltry saving of $750-$1000. Few BF deals ever give that discount. Also, the really high-end electronics are not sold in stores that have Black Friday sales, and the few that are in those kinds of stores seldom go on sale (especially not on days like BF), so all you're left with is cheap and so-so stuff for BF. I know people who do it for the adrenaline rush, for the socializing while standing in line, and for the sense, although misplaced, of saving money. But that's foolish, just don't spend on anything if you absolutely don't need it.. If there's one thing about America, there's almost nothing that you can never buy again and there will always be a sale. TG->Xmas->After Xmas->New Year's->Valentine.. it goes on and on.
Amazon (not amazon marketplace) ftw... Free shipping, no tax and they will wrap the gifts for a minimal charge so you can ship straight to grandma.
