Funny thing about that article is there weren't that many brand name/decent spec models on sale. Target had a 40in Westinghouse LCD for $298, which is great size wise but store house brands like Westinghouse are usually mediocre and the refresh rate is a pathetic 60Hz. Almost all of the other cheapo doorbuster LCDs were house brands or off brands like Emerson, Westinghouse, Apex, etc... and/or were 720p. A lot of plasma's went on sale, like buy.com's 42in for $300, but most people agree that plasma's aren't as good as LCD's. The reasons being namely burn-in and glare. It was hard to find a decent brand in the $400-$600 range for a 42in+ LCD with a 120Hz refresh. Bottom line, the article was right. Dealer's used this black friday to clear out stock of total crap HDTVs. I was so happy I got a half-way decent screen (Toshiba 46in 1080P 120Hz for $500).
Not a bad deal at all. Particularly if you were getting the TV just to upgrade from the one you have now.
FYI - anyone looking for a bluetooth headset - you can get an LG HBM-235 for $1 (after rebate): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...m_re=bluetooth_headset-_-75-984-035-_-Product ...or for 77 cents (after rebate) if you prefer Frys: http://www.frys.com/product/6436342?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
Went in waaaaaaaaaaaaay late (around 12:30pm) and scrounged around some carts in Walmart (full of crap people knocked over/misplaced that had to be put back on the floor) and found myself the 1.5TB Harddrive doorbuster for $69...Seagate Free Agent. Did the same thing at Target, looked through the HD section, found nothing....then kept lookin behind things and lo and behold, someone hid a 1TB doorbuster portable $69....bought that too....WD Elements SE. Now keepin the Western Digital and sellin the Seagate. Just gotta pick up a bluetooth headset, a wireless N adapter, and I'll be a happy guy.
47" LG 1080P LCD 120hz, 100000:1 cs ratio. Got it for 700. It wasn't a door buster by any means... but it was a pretty good tv, just came out last month, couldn't help to pass it up. It's similar to newegg's doorbuster 47" LG.

yes, educate yourself, don't just accept and believe the 'common wisdom' because in this case, you are as wrong as you could possibly be. Plasma is not 'old technoilogy', it is not being discontinued, it is not obsolete. You can't get a picture as good as plasma on an LCD at this time, nor can even the best LCD refresh rates come close to plasma, not can LCD match the blacks and contrast of a good plasma, such as Samsung's.
This is correct... Plasmas are just as great as LCD's and sometimes better in terms of picture quality, brightness, etc. BUT, what pushes people away from them is the burn that creates when standstill pics are there... game systems and receivers/dvrs have done a good job though of auto-dimm when paused so it isn't as much of a problem.
The black levels on the plasma can not be touched by an Lcd or Led. That is why I went with plasma for my bluray collection.
I didn't like the blacks on the plasmas I saw at Ultimate Electronics. We went LED because of it... Different strokes for different folks I guess...
I wish Pioneer still made plasmas, Pioneer Elites were the best TVs. edit: to clarify, Pioneer stopped making TVs altogether earlier this year.
